Topic: Review rating Posted: November 21 2007 at 20:21 |
Just wanted to clarify sth that has to deal with review ratings there are two topics that deal with review ratings coming from simple ratings, members' reviews and collabs' reviews I certainly realise that one of them is more recent but wanted to clarify which is valid for people not to become misunderstood when reviewing an album, because there is controversial info about reviews counting methodology maybe some of the info needs to be edited in one of the topics Thanks

The site rules and guidelines section will always contain the current information.
Cheers!

now I'm more confused what about this improvement to the site??? it is not valid?? The site will therefore implement the following policies:
- All existing ratings without reviews will be retained in the database
- Ratings without reviews will continue to be accepted (subject to compulsory registration with the forum as described above)
- Ratings with reviews (of over 200 characters - note this is characters, not words) will have a value of double those without a review.
- Ratings with reviews by Prog Reviewers and Special Collaborators
will have a value of three times the value of a rating without review

Entirely valid still, but the multipliers in the third and fourth points have since been increased.

I thought this thread was going to be about the possibilty of rating reviews - so a highly rated review would count more towards an album's chart position.
I think that's a good idea (that this thread has sparked ) - anyone else like it?

^ I think it would be a good idea to simply add a "binary" rating for the reviews:
Option 1: I think this review is valid and helpful Option 2: I think this review is misguiding and not helpful
(similarly to Amazon.com)

Why binary, out of interest?
Wouldn't it be better to be able to rate the reviews in the same way as the albums;
5 stars: This review is a masterpiece and extremely helpful
4 stars: This review is essential reading for fans of this album
3 stars: Good review
2 stars: Review for collectors and fans of this music only
1 star: Poor review
Just a thought - obviously I'm being a bit flippant with the actual text - but I think the concept is reasonable.

^ So which one of us is the RatingFreak? BTW: I don't know if you noticed - in the other thread I mentioned that I created the tag "Microtonal" on my website. I'd be glad if you could tag some albums accordingly ...

Just trying to be consistent in approach - and you made the (valid) comparison to Amazon.
This way a user could sort reviews and find those which could be most helpful - useful, if an album has many reviews.
It could also be used to rank reviewers in ways other than greatest number - who knows, it might even knock Sean from his unassailable perch...

actually it sounds like a great 'rating freak' idea
but this will get too complicated in rating albums...

The more I think about it, the more I think it might be more useful to have this as separate to the album's chart position - just because a review is good, it doesn't mean that the album is better for it.
But being able to quickly see reviews that others have found helpful would be a useful feature - don't you think?
Note that in my 5 star system, there is only one "Poor" or bad rating - just as with the album ratings - obviously we don't want to rate anyone's review as poor, unless it really is, and the other markings reflect this by showing levels of helpfulness, rather than any indication of other qualities.

I think it's enough to have two ratings:
* good review
* bad review
You click the former for reviews that really impress you and the latter for reviews that come across as really inconsistent or come close to not meeting the guidelines. That way you could leave most of the 'average' reviews unrated.

I would rather go with Mike's idea if the thought is to be implemented good/bad is not a fair discrimination, but helpful/not helpful is appropriate
