I like your list Toni, it gives a good representation. I might have added God Is An Astronaut or Set Fire To Flames.

Nobody posted on NEO PROG yet, so I'll give my list of essentials for this genre of which I'm a great fan. First of all I have to say I restricted myself to 1 album of each "essential" band except Marillion, since they are more than essential, quintessential to this genre. The choice of albums also reflects my personal preferences
Marillion: Fish era -
Script For A Jester's Tear (The most essential album of the genre)
Misplaced Childhood
H-era: These two albums define the music of this period best IMO:
Afraid of Sunlight
Marbles
IQ - Subterranea
Pallas - The Dreams Of Men
Arena - The Visitor
Collage - Moonshine (absolutely great!!!)
Clepsydra - More Grains of Sand
Saens - Escaping from the Hands of God
Satellite - Evening Games
Gazpacho - Night (mixture of neo prog and post rock)
Aragon - Rocking Horse and Other Stories
Sylvan - Posthumous Silence
and the DVD's:
Pendragon - And Now Everybody To The Stage
NEO - Broadcast

good list I have not heard Unexpect though Death's Symbolic is definitely in I don't really agree with a Murder of Crows, found it weak and not representative of the genre... |

Hehe, knew that, but I maintain that it's an essential neo-prog album which shows what the combination of neo prog with post rock could look like...That it's now in Xover just might mean that there's some neo influences in that catagory...

I don't think there's anything psychedelic or spacey about The Wall really, in fact I think it's closer to symphonic, any of the albums till Dark Side of The Moon would be better examples of the Psychedelic\Space Rock genre. What do you think? Edited by SgtPepper67 - October 31 2007 at 10:00 |

The Wall is NOT "close" to Symphonic. If this band was submitted and it's only album was The Wall, the Symphomic Team wouls send it further to Crossover for evaluation

This is how I define Symphonic for the moment:
YES - Close to the Edge ELP - Welcome Back My Friends.... Camel - Snowgoose Focus - Hamburger Concerto Genesis - Selling England By the Pound YES - Tales From Topographic Oceans Steve Hacket - Voyage of the Acolyte Grobschnitt - Solar Music Live Harmonium - Si On Avait Besoin D'une Cinquieme Saison Anglagard - Hybris After Crying - haven't decided which album They're all pretty much in the top 100 and I think they represent what I think are the most important specific (the "Classical" core of ELP, the tight interplay of Gensis, the overblown extravaganza on Tales) and non-specific (like the "space" of Grobschnitt, "avant" of After Crying, the "neo" of the second symphonic wave, the eclectism and heavyness of Anglagard, the "folk" side on Harmonium) traits of Symphonic Prog.
