Topic: bands that no one dislikes Posted: October 30 2007 at 06:49 |
obviously every band is going to have its detractors, im sure if I played 21st century schizoid man to anyone at a mariah carey concert they would not enjoy it.
but there are a few select bands that anyone who like prog just doesnt dislike. Ive never met anyone who says they enjoy prog music and say they dont like king crimson.
i think that a few of the bands like that are
king crimson
yes
and even though theyre not prog, no one really dislikes zeppelin.
i know im speaking in generalitys but does anyone have a real disdain for those bands?
im sure theres alot of people indifferent to them though.

No one, even here, loves every band. But from what I've seen, the most popular are King Crimson, Yes, Genesis, Van Der Graaf Generator, and Riverside.

I'm afraid no band or artist has no detractors at all. I know quite a few people here dislike VDGG, KC, Genesis or Yes. Being the most popular doesn't mean that no one dislikes you, anyway.

Riverside seems to get a lot of love. Not much from me though.

I dont like KC, VDGG or GG !
It's a matter of taste and I recognise their importance to Prog.
I dont like KC musically, it's just not my thing. VDGG is a Hammill dislike and I dont like the quirkiness of Gentle Giant.
I like bands like PFM, Harmonium, Bacamarte and maybe this is a clue as to why I dont particularly like those 3...

VdGG is certainly not in the category bands-that-almost-everyone-likes. I've got a few friends who like the band, and so do I, but some of my other prog loving friends really dislike Hammill's singing style.
I think Genesis is one of the bands that has the most admirers, but I've seen people on this prog site who are heavily into prog, but don't like Genesis. Maybe Yes is the band which has the lowest level of progressive allergic reactions ? Could be... But even Yes has its non-believers in Progland.

There is no such thing as a universally liked band amongst us prog heads. Interesting question to ponder though. Now if you want to start a list, how about artists that are respected by everyone though not enjoyed by everyone here?

I have a very good friend who led me to: Eloy, Nektar and Porcupine Tree.......He does like alot of prog but he detests Genesis and King Crimson.......Gentle Giant could have been good but I don't think they are very good sonwriters;great harmonies and great musicianship though......I think on this site Genesis gets the most love and Kansas gets the least,ie....No one ever talks about Walsh and the boys.....

I strongly dislike all three of those. Especially Yes. I couldn't really say that I disdain KC (or Yes), but that implies something beyond mere dislike. I do like Genesis, though.
There are lots of people who like Kansas. Certainly more than most of the Avant groups (even the more popular ones), which are rarely mentioned outside of the RIO thread.

I would add two more of the most universally liked bands here are ELP and Dream Theatre.

Difficult (but also clever) question... "Bands" is impossible, but I think no one here dislikes "In the Court..." and maybe "Thick as a brick"... Answer if not

I dislike zeppelin, probably the most overrated band in existence.

Someone mentioned Porcupine Tree. They are also one of those bands no one seems to dislike.

certainly "admired" anyway (for their musicianship at the very least), and I would hazzard a guess that most people have at least one album in their collection.
Truth be told, I haven't found a band in the PA yet that would have me reaching for the 'mute' button.

Because of the amount of the diversity in the bands that fall under the prog umbrella and the diversity of the tastes of the people that come to this website I would be shocked if there was a single band that was widely liked by all members.
I think that the "Original Big 7" have the greatest chance but I don't think it would be difficult to find posters that dislike each of these bands (as some have already shown up on this thread). The "Original Big 7" as I have come to know them from this site are King Crimson, Genesis, Yes, Rush, Emerson Lake and Palmer, Jethro Tull, and Pink Floyd. (there were threads from a few months back discussing these, and probably a post for just about each of these bands saying that the poster didn't think they were one of the Big 7, but that they would include VDGG, Gentle Giant, Camel, etc as their choice for Big 7). I also think that all 10 of these bands probably have an "x" is overrated, or I hate "x" thread.
