^ it's been included for ages ... or maybe you mean something different? Please list some bands which you consider to be "Symphonic Prog Metal" and are not yet listed.

I believe he means as a separate section, like my suggestion for neo-traditional prog metal (which would include the aforementioned symphonic prog metal).

A distinction on that level would be very difficult to make. For example if you single out all the Power Metal influenced bands and all the Symphonic bands, what about those which are both (Pagan's Mind, Symphony X etc)?

These distinctions will be implemented as sub-divisions of the three existing genres rather than separate genres (band lists of the subdivisions may be listed in the genre definitions).

Unless Pagan's Mind has changed with their new album (which I haven't heard), they aren't and Symphony X is (really now, how can you steal so much of Mozart's Requiem and still not be symphonic? Tongue).

Of course, there can still be questionable entries (how about Angra, who rarely use true symphonic bits but often use traditional Brazilian parts?), and I don't think we'd have enough bands to make a real section out of just symphonic acts. (And yes, I had Angra, Time Requiem, and SymX in mind when I suggested neo-traditional for a genre.)

//EDIT: Not to mention Pain of Salvation's brief love affair with a small group of musicians...

^ Symphonic does not necessarily mean orchestral or particularly related to classical music ... it can also mean lush keyboards and a certain type of melodic interplay between instruments. It's really difficult to define!

1 : harmonious, symphonious 2 : relating to or having the form or character of a symphony <symphonic music> 3 : suggestive of a symphony especially in form, interweaving of themes, or harmonious arrangement <a symphonic drama>

Sorry, I had to do it.TongueLOL

^ no problem ... I know what "symphonic" means literally, it just means something different when you us it in combination with "prog". Just ask Iván or have a look at the definition of Symphonic Prog.Smile

I can't see where our mate PHP is trolling.... he's stating his points of view, having a wide knowledge of prog, which are exactly the opposite as Mike, as Progtolo, etc. etc. etc..... discussin' is good, even if we barely arrive to a common conclusion.

Have you even read through this thread?Or any other threads PHP participates in?

"However, it creates a DIVERSITY, which everyone has to RESPECT and TOLERATE. There isn't an absolute truth or a god called PROG who says what is prog, what is not...... to each his own!.... "

PHP runs all over the forum posting in every thread dealing with prog metal, stating his opinion that none of this is prog, not prog metal, not post-rock,etc.He says we don't know what true prog is,and he does.

Is that tolerant? Is that diverse? Is that respectful of other people's tastes? He is trying to tell us what is prog and what is not, according to HIM.

We aren't trying to shove prog metal down your throats,if you don't like it,fine. There are a lot of other genres here for everyone to enjoy. But he is trying to shove HIS opinion down our throats, and I for one am sick of it.

Do you see me or Mike or Teo go into a Zeuhl thread and go...."Well,Zeuhl isn't prog, you guys don't know what true prog is,but we do",and then end it all with annoying,smart-ass emoticons?(I'm not picking on Zeuhl mind you,I just picked agenre randomly).

And we don't hide who we are,and post using multiple identities.Big%20smile

Ya know what I mean?Wink
Sorry, but you're just WRONG, I have only ONE account...please..

I guess I can see where PHP is coming from; Prog-Metal does seem to be a tad inclusive, but oh well. There's still plenty of excellent music to be found in these categories and I'm glad to see the site is ummm progressing!Hug

Some trolls seem to survived the demise of Sauron, probably olog-hai trolls, they can even log on to the internet,  but not really able or wantingto write something worthwhile.

On this topic interesting, that Opeth was moved to the tech /extreme family, I tend to agree, but sub-sub genres may change even per albums by the same band.

I think that Orphaned Land should be in extreme/tech instead of experimental/post.

Wow, I've been gone for a while, and look what happens!

Actually the new categories make more sense to me... I had always thought that Prog Metal was too all-encompassing of a genre to include such a variety of styles.

Well done!
