I'm listening to Kansas' Leftoverture and just develop gooseflesh when Hope goes into that fuzzy bass solo about a minute in on "Magnum Opus".
Other bass moments that tingle the spine? E Edited by E-Dub - October 25 2007 at 17:15 |

"One Whole Half" from The Rainmaker's second disc (import only) by the Flower Kings. Jonas plays bass in ways that would make Tony Levin and possibly even Victor Wooten nervous

Where's Harrison Ford? by Altered State has some amazing bass playing. Nearly anything played by Percy Jones. Elephant Talk by King Crimson has groundbreaking stick plaing by Tony Levin. Andy West with The Dixie Dregs, especially on Odyssey. Stu Hamm on his album Radio Free Albemuth. And Stanley Clarke's new disc, The Toys of Men is fantastic. A throwback to the prime RTF albums.

Maybe not goose bumps for all, but I love the bass work on Wingful of Eyes by Gong (and the rest of the Shamal album as well).

There's this spot between verses in Bellerin' Plain by Captain Beefheart where all the instruments drop out except the bass and it makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside.
Another of my favorite bass moments is also from Rockette Morton (or Mark Boston, if you prefer), in the form of the Hair Pie Bake III bass solo that would often transition between pieces in Beefheart shows. It's only about 30 seconds long, but it never fails to impress. |

Lee Sklar on Cobham's "Stratus" : blistering propulsive . Mike Howlett Gong's "Isle of Everywhere" , Kasim Sulton on Hillage's "L" album, Hugh Hopper on Isotope's "Illusion", Hansford Rowe on Gong's Expresso II, almost everything by Percy Jones, Tony Reeves, Chris Squire , Zia Geelani (Ozric Tentacles) and Rutherford's very last bass notes on Genesis' The Knife" (studio version). Oh, I forgot Sir Paul on Abbey Road (simple but effective).

A few parts.
KC - Fracture - when John Wetton is playing that 5/4 bass lick and giving it progressively more and more distortion until it's this screaming beast of a lick. Rush - The Spirit of Radio, the end portion, with the synthesizer pedals, after the "Words of the profits were written on the studio wall part". And of course the YYZ fills, which are even better live. |

I just saw that he's replaced Mike Porcaro in Toto, who is recovering from a hand injury. Man, is he going to stick out like a sore thumb. Dude looks like he's straight from the Ozarks. Excellent bass player, though. E |

The often overlooked Mike Rutherford is my choice. His work on "Get 'Em Out by Friday" is outstanding.
