The Gathering ... they're a difficult case, since all their albums are so different from each other. In that case I think it's best to look at their masterpieces - in that case: How to Measure a Planet?. And that album is a really good example of a very calm type of experimentality. I strongly recommend to check out this sample: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_pt7gtWHWTs Big%20smile
I was referring specifically to Souvenirs which pushed the experimentation of How To Measure A Planet? a little further, but either are valid Approve, though I think they'd practically left the world of metal by then.

I think they left them it Souvenirs, but How to Measure a Planet? still has a lot of metal ... stoner metal to be precise. I love that album ... but you have to be in the right mood to enjoy it.

Do you have to be stoned to appreciate it? Geek I guess that's why I never got into The Gathering that much. Sleepy
With Krys Rygg duetting on Souvenirs you do surprise me.Shocked

I know, I surprise myself too sometimes. It's the kind of metal I dig, too.

This is great! The sub genre was just too big for all those bands, leaving many neglected and hard to find!

The ones on the site should be right up your alley, Micky. I am sure of it, because I sent them myself. Wink Heheh. One could say they are softer than some of their other songs (which aren't particularly messy or aggressive, as I tend to see it).

you know my tastes well Ivan...  I really did like them Clap

Cool. I don't think I know people's tastes well (okay, in regards to some people on this site - I do), I just know mine and assume everybody else shares the same. Glad to hear you enjoyed them, it's one of my favourite bands right now and they're getting better with each release! What's not to like? Wink

ive been exploring the new genres and have a few questions.

Opeth, Tool, Devin Townsend, and Dead Soul Tribe. experimental/post metal? im not questioning the collabs but im interersted to hear the reasons these bands are included in this category.

Well, i think that it would rather complicate good old system...

If so, why don't we split Progressive Electronic in Ambient Prog, Drone/Noise Prog, Kosmische Prog, ProgAge etc.?

It could be useful to people who generally dislike the genre, as choosing a specific subgroup for your liking and searching for similar artists would lead to discoveries in an area of the genre you would find more pleasant.

In that case, this move sounds good indeed! Big%20smile
The best you can is good enough...

Clap

It may not affect me, but I'm glad to see that Prog Metal fans will be able to better find music that they like.

Ok, love it now here are some bands that you might want to look into their placement (not trying to be a jurk just want to see evrything in its correct place)

Ved Buens Ende
Wintersun
Gojira

These should probably be moved to Tech/Extreme

Thanks for clarifying that. There are a few bands that are just really hard to pin down to one genre.

Do you think Tool are tech/extreme or "classic" prog metal ala DT?

Opeth is another really difficult one, they aren't purely tech/extreme(don't let the growls mislead you),so we can't put them there.

The definitions might need a little tweaking, and so bands might get misplaced and after some talk, debate and feedback could get placed elsewhere.

Please be patient everyone...Rome wasn't built in a day.
