Well, perhaps I'm not really a 'girl' anymore (have a look at my profile if you want to knowWink... ), but I've been into prog and rock in general for as long as I can remember, while hating all kinds of mushy, slushy, sentimental musicDead. I'm aware I am an exception, but I'm also sure there are other women around who are into 'good' music.

As to the bands you mentioned in your post, I like some of them, particularly Anekdoten, PT, Riverside and Mastodon. However, I'm not much into DT... I do love classic heavy metal too, like Judas Priest, Iron Maiden and Metallica.

wel maybe its just london, the cultural sespool of europe. I dont know one girl at my school who likes really good music, the best I find are girls liking bands like the jimi hendrix experience and other good psychedelic stuff. But ive been out [and dumpedBig%20smile] by all of them already lol.

my girlfriend doesn't listen to prog either but she likes jazz/fusion cause her father used to listen to it a lot at home and she likes some Anathema material.. but, generally, she finds it pretentious...

P.S. Ghost Rider i hope you didn't headbang at concerts.. girls headbanging is the worst think i've ever seen...
-music is like pornography...

I don't know... Arch Enemy's vocalist looks pretty cool when headbanging (what's her name.... Angela Gossow or something)

Gender and musical preferences is an interesting topic. I don't think it has as much to do with the sexes (the biological aspect of male and female) as with the genders (the cultural aspect). I think it's culture as much as anything else. I don't think there's anything biological inside women saying "You must love sentimental music... You must love brainless pop music... You must love music which actually covertly helps to maintain the traditional oppressive gender roles in which women are required to be less intelligent than men and serve to be objects of male sexuality..." It's cultural, I think, and all it takes is to break away from the cultural patterns (which of course is easier said than done).

Don't worry, guys, I've never headbanged.. I am quite keen on keeping my neck intact, and the thing has never really had any interest for me!LOL

As to what Time Signature said, I do agree wholeheartedly. I think most differences between men and women are culturally induced rather than biological. However, being as they are the product of centuries of conditioning, they are very hard to remove. Personally, I believe that tastes in music, art, literature and such depend very much on  individuals and their overall personality. People who have strong personalities and don't really care for following trends like sheep are more likely to have 'unorthodox' tastes, as it is my case and that of those other women who are into prog.

BTW; if you fancy doing some research, last spring I started a thread in the Prog Lounge about women and prog. It reached at least 5 pages, and was quite successful.

Respect Clap

Of course you can be interesting and have a strong personality without necessarily being into prog, but the point is not to follow trends like sheep. I guess it should be pointed out that just as many guys follow trends like sheep as girls do. Usually I don't really consort with those people, because I find them quite dull and uninteresting to interact with (I'm sure they think the same about me).

Claire likes prog.

I believe she got the high score for most replies in a newbie thread, probably because the word "girl" was in the topic title.

I also know 2 other girls who like prog, and my mom enjoys lots of Genesis and Rush instrumentals. And my sister likes Zed Leppelin and Tethro Jull.

Why limit this discussion to prog music?  If any of you can tell me how a woman thinks in general please let me know.  Starting with my wife!  Ouch

My ex girlfriend was a Rush fan, and liked some other prog, although her tastes generally were much more heavy than mine.

The only other women I know who liked prog was a musician and appreciated all types of music. She could spot a good musician, although she did think that prog lyrics were often laughable.

No other women I've ever met even knows what prog is.

"Hi!. Do you have time for:

dream theater

mastodon
riverside
porcupine tree
oceansize
anekdoten
pain of salvation
etc etc?" = NOT A VERY GOOD STRATEGY. SPECIALLY FOR THE ETC ETC PART.

Anyway, with the possible exception of Anekdoten and Porcupine Tree, your list isn't worth not having the company of a lady.

I admit they are a rare find, but girls who like Prog are out there, somewhere. Many of my daughter's friends like Opeth & Nightwish... okay not Genesis or Kayo Dot, but it's still prog Wink

Looking back over the years... Several exes have pretended to like Prog and I found that really annoying, whereas other's have gotten me interested in bands like PFM and one even bought me an album to attract my attention. (see my CotC review). My wife likes some prog, (but that wasn't what attracted us to each other Wink), and she's more than happy to accompany me to prog & goth gigs (she's not so keen on the metal gigs and prefers it if I go to those alone [very alone!])

The bottom-line is it doesn't matter that much whether they do or don't - there are dozens of activities that we like that they don't and vice versa.

btw: Females headbanging - nowt wrong with it, have you seen Cristina Scabbia headbang? The girlie in this video does a mean headbang http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z7CKMIhUd00 (she has also been known to mosh and crowd surf when attending other gigs.)
What?

The words "prog" and "girlfriends" are antonyms for me unfortunately . No luck yet. Maybe it's the way it should be

I'm probably a very lucky person, because my girlfriend likes pretty much every band I make her listen to. She didn't knew what was prog when I met her, but, because she has an open mind and a good musical appreciation, she liked Genesis and Porcupine Tree right away ! She even digs the weirder stuff like Can and Comus :) Sometimes, we put Supper's Ready in the car and we sing it all, she knows the song by heart !
