It's actually impossible for me to pick just one.  All suggestions so far have been excellent.

Please stop using that word. Basically, what you just did right there was this:

SHAX: I like this song.
FLOYDIAN: Yeah, me too.
LUCENT: No, you two don't like it, because it isn't actually that good, really. My opinions are fact, and you two are simply wrong.

Insulting.
Are you delusional?  All he said was he doesn't think it is as good as other do.

La villa strangiato, probably one of his best for such a poor range.
back that up with examples because he definately uses many different modes and scales like Phrygian and locrian.  I forget what one(s) is/are in locrian but I read somewhere that La Villa is in phrygian.

I've had this conversation and witnessed it enough times on PA...let's not talk about the term "overrated" anymore.

All hail King Lerxt!!! Arguably one of the most underrated guitarists in rock history, and the single reason I picked up the electric guitar at age 12.

And judging by the answers given so far, I gotta agree with the mob...

Freewill...absolutely sick.

EDIT: Adding to my answer, not only is Alex's solo just stupefying, but Geddy's bassline during it is also the stuff of legend.

And when I saw Rush on the current tour, it marked the hmm, I dunno...11th or 12th time I've seen 'em, and IMO it was the finest set I'd ever seen them play. I can't wait for the next time I get to see one of the greatest rock bands ever.Clap

I must admit I've always preferred his minimal, phrase-oriented stuff from about Signals forward.. his early lead is a little awkward

OK, has no one heard of a litlle song titled "The Necromancer"? Unbelievable playing in that one. My favorite Rush song, and that's saying alot. If you've never heard it, give it a try, especially while listening thru headphones. This one song rarely gets mentioned as one of their best, maybe because they themselves were kinds down on the entire album. Xanadu would be a close second.

Yes, that is an excellent one, and very atmospheric too. The end was a little bit to gleeful for the rest of it, but overall an excellent tune. Another reason why Steel shouldn't be overlooked.

I agree with White Shadow on this. How is it insulting? Maybe Lifeson would get insulted if he thought he had put a lot of effort in that piece of work and came out not getting appreciated, but you were just naming your preference and he/she just said it wasn't that great. The fact that the solo's not as good as you might think doesn't change the fact that you two like it, either, and I for one find it hard to see how you deduced that he/she was claiming his/her opinions are fact and why you took umbrage in what was said, when all that poorly typed entry had posted about Anesthetize was "Overrated". Sure, it was a very weak contribution - maybe even dumb - and sometimes it just bugs you too much to ignore it, but you could've replied with just a "Why?", too.
Now, by forcing the notion that the person who wrote it is dismissing your own opinions on self-righteousness (if that's what you thought of it), it just sounds like you're playing that role yourself, I mean, it might also sound that your opinion on his/her opinion (which is what it really was: just an opinion, without fundament, too) is trying to pass as fact or law, when you have little-to-nothing (?) to back it up, seeing as all that was written was - and this is very important to realize - "Overrated"; not "You're wrong and I'm right ______________(rest of the argument missing, thus making it arrogant and one-sided)", but simply "Overrated".
Sorry if this came too much as a lecture, but it just seems unreasonable to stay offended with that whole thing. Anyway, I predict you'll still be listening and basking at the greatness of Anesthetize, so I'm guessing you'll be fine.

Yeah, Caress of Steel sometimes gives the impression that it's underated, since it's not too common to talk about it, but Necromancer and Fountain of Lamneth make up for a very good piece of music. Funny that you mention the whole atmospheric qualities, because I thought I heard some Floydian influences here and there on that track (or Lamneth, don't quite remember which, now ). A wonderfully written piece, with prominent guitar skills - aside from the rest - or at the very least ambitious.

This is why you should let Robin save the day...

Clap Clap Clap

That has got to be my favourite Lifeson moment too. The whole album is underrated and put down and especially that song. The atmosphere in the beginning is simply stunning and emotional.

I don't know if schizoidman77 meant to be taken so literally, but he is largely correct. Lifeson did start to stretch a bit about '77. He plays Aeolian in La Villa and I agree it's pretty good but he doesn't quite have the chops to pull it off completely. He's trying to play like Al Dimeola and his technique isn't quite up to par.

I don't mean any of this as a put down, I like Alex and technique isn't everything. These are just observations. He can be a bit sloppy and "hides" behind loads of effects.

That being said my favorite solo is "Red Barchetta".

Too many great moments to choose but one.

A stupid question that I might ask out of naivete is what constitutes a "solo".  I think of a solo as unaccompanied and I don't know that Rush has that many of those type of moments.  In most instances he has some great guitar playing going on, but usually there is also some drums, bass, and keyboards accompanying the guitars, so technically it is not a solo.  In 2112, when he picks up a strange device that "when I touch it, it gives forth a sound" is sort of a solo but not of the "solo" variety.

I generally listen to music either listening to it as a whole or for the lyrics so I can't remember if the various guitar playing that are being mentioned are actually solos or just great guitar playing.  The other thing is that for Rush, I have always tended to pay more attention to the drums and bass than to Alex's playing.  I'm not a guitar player nor a musician so I don't tend to pick out the individual parts as well as others.
