Topic: Paradise Lost or Odyssey (SX) Posted: September 03 2007 at 19:02 |
I like both these albums, but feel "The Odyssey" is slightly better ,mainly because of the title track.
The first time I heard "Paradise Lost" I was floored by the great guitar playing and the musicianship in general, but after a few listens it sounded a bit too "Malmsteen" influenced, especially the track "My Domination" which sounds like "My Ressurrection" off Malmsteenīs "Facing the animal" album.
The song "Paradise Lost" is great although it sounds a bit rehashed from their "V" album.
Anyway thatīs just my opinion, this should be a close poll (hopefully!)

I just listened to the Odyssey this morning. Excellent album but IMO it doesnt compare to V. I love the Odyssey and its probably up there in my top 10 prog metal albums.

Thats SUCH a tough question, its like choosing between your kids!
Maybe because its a newer release but Im very impressed with Paradise Lost. Its a near perfect album to me. The Odyssey (at the time it was released) was also my favourite album.
At least theyre consistent!

The Odyssey (the song) is tough to beat...especially the ending

very disappointed in Paradise lost I was hoping that many other people felt the same way so Symphony x wouldn't ever release that kind of garbage ever again , unfortunately I was wrong most people think it is great which means probably the end of Symphony x for me ... shame that been into that band since Damnation game came out

Paradise Lost just lacks an epic like the Odyssey. That alone lets me choose the Odyssey in this poll. I was also quite disappointed with Paradise Lost. Also a quality track like Accolade II is missing on Paradise Lost. Just too much power metal...

I didn't like Paradise Lost at first listen - it really needed several spins to grow on me. Maybe you should give it some time then pick it up again and see if your opinion changes ...

I dont think Symphony X has lost anything, personally. I just believe they may have tried something a little different on this album.
I personally love the fact that its more aggressive than their other albums - something I really think they do well.

Paradise Lost. Odyssey was just a rehash of Twilight... and Divine Wings..., but PL is difirent, plus Michael Le Pond has improved massively over the 5 years between them and his bass playing really did suck on Odyssey.

Odyssey. Some tracks on Paradise Lost sounded a bit repetitive for me. V and Twilight in the Olympus are my favorites from them.

I agree with you Yorkie. I much prefer all of their previous work over Paradise Lost. It seems to me that the other bands on the Gigantour had a huge influence on Symphony X for Paradise Lost. I think that the album is their most metal, but their least progressive. I also agree with the above references to Yngwie Malmsteen. I had a sense of deja vu like I had heard some of this before, and Yngwie was exactly who I concluded it sounded like.
