A bit weird, not having any comments from Raffaella on this thread...

A surprise indeed! Does this call for a PM? I thought Tony would also be playing a bigger part.

Total agreement, Eric, which is par for the course. I don't think the admins can play favorites with bands...or can they? Hmmmm...

I listened to both Geddy and Alex's solo albums yesterday to refresh my memory on their sounds. I liked My Favorite Headache better. To me it sounded like a lost Rush album from that era. I liked Victor but it had a rawer sound to me. I couldn't imagine most of the lyrics ending up on a Rush album. To correct my previous post, the track I liked was "Shut Up, Shuttin' Up", which I confused with the title "Shut Up and Play the Guitar", which I think was a Frank Zappa song or album(s)).
By the way, has anybody listened to the Lifer self-titled album that Alex was the producer on. It has an alternative metal sound with no similarities to Rush, but I can hear some similarities to the sound on Victor. Any thoughts?

"Shut Up Shuttin' Up" which comes from a famous Bugs Bunny line, is my favorite of that album. Always puts a smile on my face. I haven't heard Lifer. Is it Alex's son's band?

What do you all think of Lifeson's solo in Anesthetize (Porcupine Tree, FOABP) ?
It sends shivers down my spine every single time I hear it.

While I'm at it, do you think Lifeson's participation on PT's latest could ignite a spark strong enough for Steven Wilson to produce the next Rush album ? That would kill !!!

No, his son isn't in the band. According to the All Music Guide website they won an MTV contest after doing a cover of a Limp Bizkit song, and then had Alex do the production of their album. The description from the All Music Guide website is as follows: "Traveling within the darkest lines of alternative metal inspirations, presenting soul-rupturing themes composed of raging guitar strains and fierce and brutal rhythms controlled by mind-gazing lyrics, Lifer discharges a newborn breed of ponderous heavy metal sounds."

It is classic Lifeson. The lead sounds similar to a Rush song but I can't put my finger on which. Of all offerings he's provided to other bands/artists, this one, in my book really captured the feel of the song. Is there any Wilson discussion on the meeting and events in the studio surrounding this? If Wilson were to produce the next album, I would be very interested. But in reality, I love so much Snakes and Arrows, I almost hope they keep Nick Raskulinecz. Having someone produce your music who loves your music and history certainly proved to be a plus for the album. Side note: I wouldn't mind if Rush put out another album and didn't tour. I need more new Rush!!!!!! The anxiety really impacted me w/ S&A. No other Rush release had done that. Not sure why though.

Not that I know of, but both Neil and Alex are PT fans.

The interview on this site of Steven Wilson touched on this a little. He was asked about having Robert Fripp and Alex Lifeson play on FOABP and Steven Wilson said that he was a big fan of Rush growing up, and that he had read an interview with Alex where Alex said he was a fan of PT. For that reason, his people contacted Alex's people and we now have Anesthetize. If their schedules were to permit it, I would think that Steven Wilson would be thrilled with the chance to work with Rush.

I share that feeling StyLaZen, Snakes & Arrows is the first album I love since I left Rush because of the poor Presto. The dynamics are great and the spirit, creativity and inspiration are almost at the level of the first part of The Eighties, almost ...
By the way, it's incredible how many excellent and exciting head-and-tail guitar solos Alex Lifeson has delivered all those years, an idea for just another Rush thread ?

Being a great fan of their earlier albums, particularly "A Farewell To Kings" and "2112" I also left after hearing poor "Presto" ... and therefore haven't heard "Snakes and Arrows" yet. Thanks for the tip!

Alex Lifeson may be no Satrani, but he sure knows how to play a heart felt lead.

yeah, except for that random and slightly confusing AC/DC song, everything on that list is either progressive or progressive related. Very nice!

Another fan here! My favourite albums are:
- Hemispheres - A Farewell to Kings - 2112 - Moving Pictures - Permanent Waves - Test for Echoes
I love Alex Lifeson's playing and of course I see Neal Peart as one of the better prog drummers around...
