Music has always been a matter of energy to me. On some nights I believe that a car with the needle on empty can run 50 more miles if you have the right music very loud on the radio. Hunter S Thompson

For the melodic side of VDGG, try first three albums (Aerosol, Least We Can, H to He) or perhaps later "Quiet Zone" if you like violin. Then go for the rest albums.

H to He is maybe the best starting point. It contains only great tracks and it is an easier album to get into by VDGG standards.

Thanks to everyone for all the great recommendations!
From the sounds of it, VDGG might appeal more to my Jane's Addiction and Pink Floyd tastes, rather than when I'm in the mood for more classically-influenced prog...I'll do some listening and report back!

H to HE, their best by far!!,
But melodic is not what characterize VDGG !!
I remember in the beginning 70s, i had an LP ''68-71'', a compilation of their first 3 recordings that was quite accessible with songs like REFUGEES . If it made it on CD, that would be a good way to start

I'm not a VdGG expert, but I searched by myself for some of their stuff and, for popular rating, this site reccomended me Godbluff, and I loved it... still I do. Then I got Pawn Hearts and it wasn't that good..... but Godbluff is such a masterpiece and surely a good start.

Not sure if I agree with it being better than Pawn Hearts. But definitely more melodic, and I think the OP would be much better off with one of those two!

I only have "H to He" and I enjoyed it. I might get pawn hearts or godbluff next.

That's my favorite song on the album. I just love Banton's piano playing and the soft little organ at the end of the song.

I think The Least We Can Do Is Wave To Each Otheris pretty melodic, compared to their later stuff. It's actually my favorite album of theirs that I have.

If your taste tends to the melodic definitely don't start with "Pawn Hearts". Try "Godbluff" instead. The voice, however, may still be to your dislike; Hammill's idea of singing is usually anything but melodic, though he can do that too. But he tends to put extreme emotions into his vocals, like fright, rage or despair, and these are best not shown by being very melodic; he screams, whispers, shouts and sometimes even sobs a lot. "House with no Door" from their album "H to He, Who AM the Only One" is a real heartbreaker; I love that song, but there is on e line in it that always puts tears into my eyes, especially due to the way Hammill delivers it. "I know my lines, I've learned them so well, I'm ready to tell whoever will finally come in of the line in my mind that's cold in the night, it doesn't seem right when there's that little dark figure running - won't somebody help me?"And my tears start rolling. a recommendation from one who has VDGG miles from any mention on his favorites list .. however... 'H to He....' is a great album. I highly recommend it. An album that you don't have to be a fan to like or love. I suspect some will recommend Pawn Hearts... I'd get that after you have tried H to He. It is dense.... sometimes that works... and sometimes it doesn't.
