I guess sounding like the catchy emo version of Rush could land you in prog related but I don't think they have solid credentials for anything more
you could argue that basically any band is intelligent and/or atypical but that doesn't make 'em prog

I just don't get the emo connection.

though they are often 'considered' prog, Claudio Sanchez sites his influences as Zep, Lizzy, Floyd and Sabbath, claiming no Rush influence at all.

^Claudio Sanchez did say, in a Classic Rock magazine interview I have, that he didn't hear Rush until fairly recently (I find that highly unlikely, personally!!) but in fairness, after that said that if there's one band he accepted being compared with, it was Rush.
The emo sound is blatantly obvious, imho- as has been said, I don't think that if you heard them, you could ever doubt it. It is that emo sound which makes me fail to warm to them. I had two albums (the 2nd and 3rd) and those vocals I struggled with. But I don't see a problem with 'prog related'...

I quite agree. IMO Coheed and Cambria might pass as prog related ... only yesterday I listened to Good Apollo (their last album), and I can understand why some people think they're prog. I also used to agree to some extent, but the more I listen to their music the more I think that they're deliberately not crossing the border between simply "complex" alternative rock music and prog. The two last albums of Three (that's a band name ) are a good example of alternative prog - and in direct comparison to for example Good Apollo the differences are obvious.

the emo connection is definitly in the vocals. loud, rapid, and it just sounds like crap. the first thing i thought of when i heard them was those japanese bands that do soundtracks for anime. The first track in Good Apollo actually kinda made me laugh. The first thing that came to mind was "prog posers"

Man, I used to hate this band. I'd go around yelling and making fun of all it's fans. The only songs I heard being A Favor House Atlantic, The Suffering, and Blood Red Summer. Then I listened to some of their non-radio friendly stuff. His vocals took a little while to warm up too, but being a fan of high pitched voices(rush, yes, mars volta, etc.) it wasn't that bad. Still there are some songs I absolutely despise, probably what most of the haters are talking about (being a former hater myself). But honestly, how many bands do you know have a concept as complex and well written as the armory wars, which will span five albums once completed. The lead singer even writes his own comics based on the concept. That's at least nerdy enough to be prog. Songs I reccomend listening for prog elements in are: 21:13- I think hes trying to break glass with his voice in the beginning but listen and you will encounter some very genesis/yes types of instrumental sections. The Crowing- Very Epic sounding, some gay parts but still good. The Willing Wells I-IV- One Starts out very atonal and quirky gradually builds to sound more minor in tonality. Two Is very happy sounding to contrast the previous composition. Has some wonderful guitar harmonies. Three is a recurring theme from earlier in the album. Four is the show of song for guitars as it ends with each guitarist ripping some beautiful melodic solos. It gradually fades into nothing, but then there is a surprise, but I won't spoil it. The Velorium Campers- Three songs about a serial killer kidnapping people, killing them and then himself. That's at least worth a few listens. Listen to these songs with an open mind and then try to tell me they don't belong on this site. It's a shame that all the 70's prog fans are open enough to listen to the music of that time but fail to see the beauty that prog has progressed upon itself into a whole new style.

I find the Amory Wars storyline to be silly. And I am a fan of science fiction and fantasy, and even read really crappy pulp fantasy novels (Forgotten Realms...they're like literature's Big Macs). But I still find Amory Wars to be terribly overwrought and melodramatic. And I think the lyrics are just obscure to a ridiculous level.
Of course, it is a comic, but I was under the impression that comics had undergone a renaissance thanks to Alan Moore, Frank Miller, and Neil Gaiman. Now comics can be literary and not...completely stupid.

Three got added recently, correct? Nice avy btw
Really? I suggested the addition ... don't know if they've been added yet.
what I don't get is how some people can like 3 and not Coheed (at least their non poppy stuff)...its like the same band
I don't agree at all. I listened to The End Is Begun several times ... then I listened to Good Apollo. The latter is much more simplistic in almost every aspect. I like it, but - as I already posted elsewhere - it seems to me like they were deliberately trying to stay out of prog territory. Except for the intro which is symphonic/orchestral and some parts of the last three songs, which is not enough to make it a prog album IMO.

Bah! We already have DT. That's enough cheese for any music site.

So, when's Weezer coming to PA?
I actually suggest for PA to ask for endorsment from MTV... now that we start adding MTV-caliber acts to the website...

I'm not sure if the fact that you think the storyline is silly is good enough reason to exclude the band. Last I checked, Queensryche is here, so....

1. It's not a matter of "despise or love" for me ... I can like both bands and still say that one is prog and the other isn't (or is prog-related).
2. Three are using many advanced rhythmic concepts on their new album ... I haven't listened in great detail to Wake Pig or Keeping Secrets, but I listened to Good Apollo and found no "irregular" time signatures. I know that prog isn't all about time signatures, but it's a part of the equation.
