i've been listening lately to Yann Tiersen & he's amazing, i'm not sure if he's considered prog though... but his music sounds like prog folk....

so any good recommendations for French Prog bands or musicians??

Maldoror:  Excellent modern symphonic prog band playing in an older Ange and Morse Code type style with a harder edge, but not metal.  Ange:  Excellent symphonic prog from the classic era.  Great emotional vocals.  Magma:  Great zheul band from the classic 70's era.  Rumbling bass and a lanquage of their own on very original vocals.  Pulsar:  Another classic era French band playing symphonic prog but more in a space rock type vein.  Lots of wonderful mellotron.  Nemo:  Great modern progressive rock band more in the art hard rock genre.  Big Rush influence but also incorperating many different genres including jazz.
How about a few bands from French Canada.  Morse Code:  Excellent French Canadian band from the classic 70's era playing a wonderful symphonic prog in the veins of Yes and Ange.  Pollen:  Another classic 70's symphonic prog band.  Hope this helps!!!

If you are looking for a modern French band then look no farther than Nemo.  Check them out here.  They are in the archives.  I think Maldoror are even better but may not be in a modern enough vein, if that's what you are looking for.

I greatly second those two bands, fantastic albums!

As for more modern French bands:
4/3 DE TRIO - Ersatz (great art rock, guitar driven)
MINIMUM VITAL - Sarabandes  and others (related to Vital Duo as well)
NEBELNEST - Nova Express (instrumental King Crimson inspired)
NEGATIVE ZONE - s/t (pink floyd inspired space rock)
NIL - both last albums (fantastic art rock, original, can be both dynamic and spacey)
SEBKHA CHOTT  - Nagah Mahdi – Opuscrits En 48 Rouleaux (in the realm of avant rock, not far from Mr Bungle)
SEVEN REIZH - Samsara (and the first album as well)
SOTOS - Platypus (Present inspired chamber rock)
SPHERIC UNIVERSE EXPERIENCE - Anima (nice prog metal not far from DT)
SYRINX - Reification (related to Nil and Thork, FANTASTIC instrumetal mostly acoustic guitar instead of electric distortion, must be in full concentration to appreciate)
TAAL - both albums (GREAT GREAT GREAT, original quirky art rock)
THORK - Weila (related to Nil, slightly quirky but good)
VOLAPÜK - Polyglöt  (and others as well. Chamber music)
VITAL DUO - Ex Tempore  (related to Minimum Vital, folk medieval)
XANG - both albums
YANG - A Complex Nature (good slightly angular rock, related to Philharmonie and Shylock)
YEAR OF NO LIGHT - Nord (prog metal)
ZAAR - s/t (related to Sotos, avant rock)

I don't know if you know those, but there are fantastic prog bands from the 70's and 80's as well, if you're interested.

Sorry that I can't elaborate more, but I'm at work.... Embarrassed

Taal - Skymind & Mister Green from 2000 & 2003 respectively. Modern rocking prog.
