Maybe this has been mentioned, but it depends on the kind of speed one means. There are many ways, techniques and tricks a guitarist has at his disposal (as Certif1ed correctly likes to point out from time to time) that will produce a flurry of notes. The speed Yngwie achieves is a whole different animal than what Holdsworth does.. the speed Petrucci shows is completely different than the speed of EVH or DiMeola or Buckethead, and on and on. Viv Campbell was a monster speedster, one of the fastest, but not nearly as accomplished as Vai or Satriani.

This concludes my silly rant..

Speed isn't everything. I'm reminded of the fable of the tortoise and the hare - both were rubbish guitarists on account of they couldn't master sweep-picking. Big%20smile

The song that essentially turned me on to Deep Purple (although it was "Hush," not "Smoke on the Water," that got me interested).

Half the guitarists mentioned here I would consider rubbish, wow you can play fast... big deal it sounds rubbish and generic.

Creativity is far better, so take your Batio's, Malmsteens and Gilberts and hope they don't inflict more musical pain ever again

Playing fast is not pointless.  It is a way for a technical guitarist to showcase their abilities on a level that other guitarists can't.  There are some speedy players who do boring things like shred nonstop: (Yngwie, Michael Angelo Batio, etc.)  But there are also amazing guitar players who shred simply because they can.  They're not showing off, they are adding a level of musical ability that others can't reach and it is not okay to judge someone's (or a group of people's) playing just because you don't understand, or are jealous.
