I can't believe those reviews, I mean after watching the abuse S&A has been getting here. I mean, I think it is a great album, but because of my appreciation of Rush, I might be biased. But after reading what these three guys have to say, I feel more comfortable in my assessment of the brilliance of the CD.
Like any great CD by any artist, it takes time to grow on you.

Thanks to y'all for keeping the topic active. It reminded me that my local record shop is supposed to get another order of S & A today. Seems the 20-30 they get every few days has sold out the same day () . See ya later. I'll come back & add my cantankarous take on the debate. Be forewarned, I liked Vapor Trails. I think it's their first good album (i.e. one I bought & kept) since Grace Under Pressure.

I just had my first listening session with the new Rush album: for sure the best since Presto, it blends some of the Moving Pictures and Hemispheres albums but in general the focus is on modern melodic rock with powerful guitar work and adventurous drumming, I still have mixed feelings but this album deserves a few more listening sessions. And the instrumentals are the absolute highlights, Rush at their best and .. most progressive

its a great album Eric, you can enjoy the album for what it is, as opposed to being concerned about what it isnt.....
There is depth too- like I said before I was decidedly unsure about it when I first played it.

is that good the new album? are they back to Prog? I doubt it. the went back but it is garanted an great album.
I have been a Rush fan since the 80's and of course I prefer the 70's and early 80's stuff, but I guess the only way I kept listening to RUSH after the stop making prog rock was because I started to look at then like if it was a different band however with the musicians from the awesome RUSH from the 70's. I don't expect to hear to prog-rock from this band anymore. I think that might be impossible for them to go back to their and 80's and 70's sound. they have abomdoned that a long time ago and had became a pure simply rock band of today.Because of that truthful and paintful reality I stop hoping to heard that sound again and just enjoy whatever they do as a rock band without expectation of any prog sound. when Hold you fire came out I was so disapointed and dislike the album alot. I did not listen to RUSH for at list 10 years untli I read a headlner in the 90's in some guitar magazine saying that they went to back to prog again and counter part was their best since Moving pictures. So I grabbed it And I really like it. I didn't it was their best as they said, but good anough.and went back as fan. So my point is RUSH is a awesme band, too bad they'ren't progressive anymore ,but they don't diserve to be drop, but to listen once a while. I did the same to Genesis and only That way I can enyoy their 80's stuffs too.!!!!! |

I would like to thank everybody for joining this thread, the question
"Should I drop Rush definitively after S&A?" is answered in my
review that was published today on the homepage:
RUSH — Snakes & Arrows Review by erik neuteboom (erik neuteboom) Special Collaborator Symphonic Prog Expert Early 1977 I had my first musical encounter with the amazing sound of this Canadian three piece formation. A friend told met that “he had bought a double live album entitled All The World's A Stage by the excellent Canadian hardrock band Rush with a killer guitarplayer”. During the first listening session I was blown away by Rush, especially the ‘heavy progressive’ sound of 2112, what a dynamic and sensational music. Half a year later I noticed a review about the new Rush LP entitled A Farewell To Kings in the known Dutch music magazine Muziekkrant Oor (written by Kees Baars who later became a personal friend of Geddy Lee). I read about lush synthesizers, twanging acoustic guitars, Moog Taurus bass pedals, exciting distorted guitar soli and awesome interplay, this couldn't go wrong! And indeed, I became a Rush die-hard who visited as an 18 year old proghead the Pinkpop Festival in 1979 during the Hemispheres tour and from then I visited all Rush concerts in Holland, including the mindblowing R30 tour last year (earplugs needed!). But I have to admit that I stopped buying Rush albums since Presto because Rush failed to keep my attention and I was not pleased with their more song oriented and guitar-based melodic rock. But after reading so many positive stories about this new Rush CD, I was so eager to listen to the sound on Snakes & Arrow that I decided to buy a Rush CD for the first time since 1988! Here is my musical analysis. The first thing I noticed during my first listening session was the connection between the cover art, the climates in the music and the lyrics: the ‘snake’ and ‘arrow’ are archetypes for the elements ‘fear’ and ‘agression’, the lion’s share of the lyrics tell about an ominous and cruel world in which we feel unsafe and unhappy and the dark and melancholical atmospheres in the songs match with the archetypes on the cover art. And I think Rush has evaluted their musical direction after the many negative reactions about the poor previous CD Vapor Trails: in my opinion the three musicians has done their best to make powerful and varied compositions, I cannot trace one weak song on this CD although a few songs are no more or less than tastefully arranged melodic rock songs (featuring a pleasant integration of instruments like the Mellotron, Greek bouzouki and mandolin). But quite a lot tracks sound captivating and dynamic like the opener Far Cry (fluent and propulsive with fiery, distorted guitar, an adventurous rhythm-section and some ‘Hemispheres echoes’), Armor And Sword (great tension between the acoustic and electric parts and a biting guitar solo in the compelling climax) and the instrumentals The Main Monkey Business (exciting and alternating with awesome interplay), Hope (warm acoustic guitar as a tribute to Jimmy Page) and the (too) short Malignant Narcissus (sensational and propulsive, it reminds me a bit of YYZ). After a few listening sessions I have concluded that Rush revenged themselves after the disappointing album Vapor Trails and even the Rush fans who are not pleased with the ‘new Rush’ (since Counterparts) will enjoy at least half of this CD. But don't expect a Hemispheres Part Two or something like that! From an objective point of view this album deserves four stars, personally I go for 3,5 stars. ..... and now I am going to order tickets for one of the two late October concerts in Ahoy, Rotterdam, the place where I have seen Rush so many times ! Yeah I saw your review earlier Erik. A very fair and balanced review and it's good to see another convert to the album. I agree there isn't a weak song on the album, perhaps the first time I could ever say that since Moving Pictures. It has a real variety- for me Vapor Trails was almost all mid paced heavy rock songs and this is definitely not just that.

I see your faith was true, Erik, therefore you have found peace.
What Jimmy Page tribute are you talking about, exactly? Is there something written down in the liner notes, or it's you feeling a musical connection (hence you made a metaphor)? I can be nothing but turned on by any reference to the Zepp.

Well Andu, when Rush was founded in the early Seventies they started to play covers from Cream and Led Zeppelin and Alex Lifeson has pointed at Jimmy Page as a main source of inspiration. If I listen to that acoustic piece on Snakes & Arrows, I reminds me of the acoustic Led Zep tracks Bron-Y-Our Stomp, especially the way of playing rhythm guitar. I won't say it is meant as a tribute but in my opinion you can trace Jimmy Page elements.

Well Snow Dog, I have to admit that in the end I couldn't resist to buy it and I had promised it to Tony R30 because he has made a review on the homepage I have to admit that I was afraid to be disappointed and although it still sounds as the new Rush, I am delighted about their efforts to make more elaborate and varied compositions, not only pleasant melodic rock. Thanks Salmacis, Progsmylife and Tony R30 for your kinds words Thanks to Alex Lifeson for his very inspired, R&R drenched guitarwork :

I'll just repeat my post from another thread. It's taken me 4 visits to the record shop to buy it. They kept selling out their orders the same day they came in. & they tell me the distributor had to set up extra production just to catch up to the demand. And you know what, it couldn't happen to a nicer bunch of guys. Contrast that to the failed 2007 Van Halen reunion tour. Two egos enjoying each other revenue generating possibilitiies, until they actually talked to each other. |

Let's hope so. The rest of the chart looks positively uninteresting. I don't care for Nickelback, although some of my friends love them. But when they're the only "rock" act in the top 10, it is a bit discouraging. There must be something out there meant for more than "tweens" (my daughter's one, they have a right to their own music) , dancing , or whining. |

^ There is... it's Rush's Snakes and Arrows.
At least, if you're just counting the stuff toward the top of that chart. :) And actually, Tori Amos' new album is up there now, too. I haven't heard it yet, but she usually delivers interesting music. Edited by StarsongAgeless - May 11 2007 at 12:58 |
