I think the idea was to maximise the band's chart position by getting people to order via recognised chart stockists.
However, I had to virtually plead for info regarding the situation vis-a-vis ordering direct from Burning Shed or Headphone Dust, If I had known from the beginning that the album wouldnt be available from either of those two I could have got an order in when the Special Edition was still available (by dint of being in the queue earlier).
So I have ended up spending nearly £30 to order the Special edition from Holland.
Thanks PT |
I paid €37 ... but it hasn't arrived yet.

To be honest, unless you've got a decent 5.1 surround sound system to play it on I wouldn't bother with the special edition. I got my copy yesterday at the signing (sorry Tony! ) on the basis that it came with a 40-page book and chiefly because for some reason I'd convinced myself the DVD came with video content (specifically a "Making Of.." documentary) as well as the 5.1 mix. I don't know where I got this info from or why I convinced myself of that, but it doesn't. The book's nice enough but hardly worth the extra cash involved. Unless you feel you must listen to it in 5.1 on your surround system then I'd cancel your order and stick with the standard 2-channel version.

I have a €80 surround system connected to my computer ... Logitech rules! It actually sounds much like a system 10x as expensive, and I'm sure I'll love listening to the new PT album on it - it's not about 100% pristine audio quality, but about clever arrangement of instruments in the surround mix.

"The Making Of Documentary" is the Rush Special Edition....
....I want the 5.1 mix, I just know it will sound great on my surround sound system.

Well, I never got my Special Edition. I feel like I've been mugged especially as I ordered one for my friend as well/
PLAY.COM never bothered to inform me that they couldnt fulfill my order for the Special Edition - they apologise of course, and obviously I should have checked my order history. They confirmed my initial order though. I will never buy another CD off them again! This is the second time they have let me down in 4 orders!
I've just had to leg it down to HMV to get a regular copy...
...I partly blame Porcupine Tree themselves. They are one of those bands you want to support by buying direct from their distributors so they get a better deal, but they left it very late to tell us that Burning Shed and HD wouldnt be stocking the CD for the initial launch.
WELL DONE PT, I COULD HAVE ORDERED THE SPEC EDITION MUCH EARLIER IF I HAD KNOWN THIS SOON ENOUGH. |
I'm a bit confused by all this.I ordered the special edition from my regular prog supplier (CD services) .They e-mailed me to tell me they couldn't get it as only 1000 copies had been printed in total. So I tried elsewhere (Play.Com) and yesterday I got an e-mail confirming they had posted it (not yet received). Meanwhile CD services sent me out the regular edition which I recieved a few days ago. So I rang them up today to say that I didn't need it as Play.com were sending it to me.They were a bit surprised as their understanding was that all 1000 copies destined for the UK were SCRAPPED because of a technical fault..although he did confirm that people had managed to obtain a copy from Holland. Now I'm wondering what Play.com have sent me.They've charged me 17.99 so it better not be the regular edition
I'll keep you posted on the ongoing saga.(could be the concept for their next album)
btw Brilliant album.Played it 5 times already.Album of the year along with Muse 'Black Holes And Revelations'.

Richard, I got an email from Pay.com yesterday too saying they were sending me two copies. I phoned and asked how they could be sending me two copies seeing as they claimed I'd never orderes it...anyway, they are going back . I have also cancelled my pre-order for the new Rush album with them too...
I will never order a CD or DVD off them again. If an album is slated for release on the 16th April, I want it to be on my welcome mat on that day...
The surround mix is fabulous!

Two copies? I've ordered a lot of stuff from play.com in the past and they've been fine to be honest. I'm very intrigued to see what I end up with.

I originally ordered 2 copies, one for me and one for my friend Andy ( if you are reading this baldy...hi!!)....my problem with Play.com is that I want these things to arrive day of release.

Completely with you. It's just I don't have a bloody surround system!!
Oh and Tony, that (the Rush making of) would be where my confusion stems from - just too darned excited by all the albums out this month
The Rush one better be good then - as by the time it arrives I'll have sprung for two making of docos. Or something...

So you all that have the album (I should get it next Tuesday), does the solo by Alex Lifeson seem out of place as some folks thought?

No, not at all. But it sounds more like a Belew solo than a Lifeson solo to me ... very Avant-Garde, a bit like the solo on Deadwing.

My wife recognised it instantly. She knew Lifeson was on the album but didnt know which track -she popped her head in and said "is that Alex Lifeson's solo?"
