Topic: Stop the related genre now... Posted: April 18 2007 at 16:01 |
My suggestion is to stop any future additions to that genre... is OK like it is right now, but if you continue to add more bands (many of them clearly non-prog) this site credibility will start suffering...(if it hasn't already)... Now I hear Steely Dan... We have Jeff Beck (i don't know in which category but anyway, it's an example)... I guess this is turning into a matter of "I am a fan of band X, I'll try to have them included in PA".... Please, i'm not saying this 'casue I'm a troll or anything, I just want this site to remain prog... Bands like The Decemberists should be here in art rock, but if they are coming to prog-related, let's not include them at all... And stop with the "fabulous musician" excuse for inclusion.... After Beck, I guess Hendrix and other will have an open path to get here....

Well Jeff Beck should actually be in jazz fusion, at least in my eyes.

But you are a Troll with a capital T But I see what you mean by the prog-related genre. It seems to be watering down the site but its fine because not too many bands are added to it (well I don't notice many additions to the genre)

The Admin Team makes the final decision on which Prog-Related (or Proto-Prog) bands are to be added.
Basically we monitor discussion and then weigh up whether the suggested band is Prog-Related or not and make the decision on whether to add or not. A vote is taken and the majority carries obviously. If a member of the Admin Team was the proposer of the band up for discusion then they wouldnt vote.
The youngest member of the Admin Team is over 40. I think we know enough about Prog's heritage to make the decision...

The only problem I have about prog-related is that it seems people want to more often propose bands for prog-related, instead of bands for the other genres (minus proto).

That's a good point. It's easy to focus on bands that are well known. Some of us have decided to try to do more to promote lesser known artists. It's a bit disheartening when a new band gets added, and no one pays attention. These guys are the future of prog.
I suggest you check in with Erik's thread, and things that Avestin posts. They always have new things to check out.

Well, although i am new here i hope i have a chance for a opinion since i listen progressive rock/metal/art rock'n'stuff many years. For the last years it seems that a lot of people who think they know what progressive music is load a ton of bands into prog which do not belong there. That's the situation with genres too. You have Proto/RIO/Art rock/Prog related/Indo/Proto rock and blah blah blah... i remember back in the late '80 you had only Progressive rock, Progressive metal and maybe Art rock and you knew exactly which bands fall in which genre. Nowdays it's all mixed up and people tend to philosophy too much over it. I'm for the simplest thing... Progressive rock, Progressive Metal, Art rock, and mybe Jazz/Fusion, but that last doesn't fits into progressive music mainly because progressive rock or metal is a mixture between lot of various types of music and Jazz/Fusion too! Do not exaggerate!

I think it is too simplistic to assume that if we limit or stop the prog related additions, people will instead focus on obscure prog bands. People tend to go with what they know. If there is an issue with bands who should be here not being approved for addition, that is a separate issue to the rights and wrongs of the prog related and proto prog sections. The question is therefore, what is the best way to improve the admissions process, if indeed it needs improvement?
I say "if it needs improvement", because there is a tendency among some (but by no means all) members to demand the inclusion of a band, but be unwilling to do anything towards actually including them. I think before anyone proposes a band for inclusion, they should be prepared to write the biography and add the albums as a minimum.
On the other hand, I am sure there are probably a number of bands who have slipped into PA as prog bands because people are generally unfamiliar with their music. Had they been popular, they might have been subject to greater scrutiny (I have no particular genre in mind there, it is a general statement).

I know what you mean, but the philosophy of progressive music as i see it is, not - like listening to Britney Spears - put the CD and something is getting out of the speakers, it's rather type of music which demands a certain (more or less) concentration on it. This kind of thinking i have for the progressive music knowledge in general. I don't think that PA should be concentrated ONLY on obscure bands, and i know that music in general is changing, but if we're going to think of bands and music only in a way that we have to give the young a chance and there are our future, we submit to chance of losing the RIGHT identity of progressive music, which., and that's a fact is changing right now! Well i'm against it - i don't like when bands like Muse or god help us Queens Of Stone Age or... don't know what being loaded onto progressive wagon. Progressive as it is, is a very wide type of music, but in the same time it's defined, and that's what i like, or else we'll be all lost in variations of mixtures of genres and then chaos comes in!

Before dealing with such a murderous threat, I have to say that I happen to love a particular prog-related band called MUSE, I even gave it 5stars! For me it's prog, though. What I mean is , stop adding every kind of artists just because he's a legend. Maybe I focused in the related category when I really was trying to address the whole addition problem in general.
About this threat... It will be quite difficult for any of you to kill me... for if you do it, who's going to be the Voice that all of you will go to in times of need and when wisdom is required? It would be like the apostles killing the prophet, like the students killing the teacher... So if you really plan to assasinate me, keep in mind that my legend will grow on, I'll become a prog-martyr... and finally get Amorphis into PA!!

If you do, please, find a place at least for Kate Bush, the Alan Parsons Project and Wishbone Ash.

You know, some have a point. I'll keep it brief. Please see Deep Purple's albums that are in the top 100. In Rock, a prog album ? One prog song - Child in Time! Made in Japan - Again - Child In TIme. Great band, great music, but "prog" is a big stretch. Mind you, if their highest rated album here was the Royal Philharmonic, I could see that the rest of their work could follow.
