ProgRobUK wrote: Hi everyone,   Tried to sign up to PA ages ago but never got it activated properly.  But I want to write a review so thought I had better get the account working and it worked no problem... age must be getting to me.   Well, to introduce myself - I like prog, I'm called Rob, and I live in the UK - hence the somewhat uninventive moniker   My story goes something like this.  When I was about 14 or so, a fried at school gave me a tape with ELP's Brain Salad Surgery on one side and Hawkwind's Astounding Sounds on the other.  He followed it up a little later with a second tape with Queen and Queen II on them.  So started my love affair with prog.   Initially, I was in to Hawkwind (and various spin-offs), Genesis, early Queen (which is really quite proggy), Pink Floyd, Magnum, Peter Gabriel solo stuff, Mike Oldfield, early Steve Hackett solo stuff, Steve Hillage and, to some extent Yes and ELP.   Then I got married, had children, acquired a mortgage, etc and funds became short so stopped really buying any music (scary).   I remember then one evening listening to the radio while decorating and I heard this fantastic music on it ... a bit like Genesis but not the same.  A few years later I heard this fantastic band and realised they were the same band I had heard on the radio - Marillion.  I bought my first prog album for years with Misplaced Childhood.   Over time (and using the public library) I got to hear loads of their music and started to spend again.  My wife also got into Marillion and they are now both our no. 1 favourites.    But the itch for things prog got worse and so I have recently (over the last couple of years) really got back into prog big time.  So, now my list of great bands also includes: Dream Theater, Spock's Beard, Transatlantic, Magenta and Porcupine Tree.  Also I've recently been particularly listening to Frost*, Karmakanic and a bit of Salem Hill.  Today's album is Sylvan's Postumous Silence (and it's sounding pretty good to me).   I have so far failed to get into Rush or The Flower Kings, despite trying (sorry )   So that's what I'm into.  I get ideas for new music from sites (especially this one) and from internet radio (I thoroughly recommend Delicious Agony) but I'm keen to hear of other ideas for bands/albums which push the envelope but have a little similarity to my likes.   Regards, Rob

Welcome, Rob. It's so funny that you mentioned Sylvan's Postumous Silence because I've been listening to it a lot the past day or so. "A Kind Of Eden" is just so beautiful and has become another entry in my goosebump moments of prog. I listened to Presets today and it's sounding better and better with each listen.

Good to see another Sylvan fan here. Look for a live CD/DVD to be recorded here shortly with Postumous Silence performed in it's entirety.

Of course, I can't go without recommending Marillion's Brave and Marbles. I've also been listening to a lot of The Puppet Show, Shadow Circus and Iona lately.

ProgRobUK, welcome!
I 've never got into Rush for good. But, i spent weeks listening to VDGG until they start to grow on me. Now its one of my favorites!So, keep listening!

In the past year, both my sons are now teenagers, I was ditched by the wife and as of June 4th...NO MORE MORTGAGE! I've realized my own private renaissance and have acquired more music recently than when I was a teen. Not that I advocate divorce, but this year was a very good listening year....besides, my ex didn't quite get prog music anyhow. Don't ever have to hear "TURN IT DOWN" again! Whew!!!!
