Due to the comments, Tuz... nevermind, it's being evaluated as "inappropriate" as you reported (I copy all reported reviews to my PC).

So far I have failed to hear anything notably progressive about their music.
Good summary
![]()
A common misconception - that is one aspect of Progressive music,
but that's not what it's all about, and many bands in many genres of
music push boundaries without necessarily being considered progressive.
The Stranglers are a prime example.
Again, no - Progressing in a literal sense is only a part of what Prog Rock bands do.
Anyway, it's entirely arbitrary - one person's
boundary-pushing and experimentation is another person's "been there,
seen it, done it, bought the T-Shirt".
Progressive music doesn't necessarily Progress in the sense of change - or even progress in the sense of linearly develop.
See Wikipedia for a list of typical characteristics
- for once, I won't disagree with what it says, because I played a
major part in reconstructing that section, and it now accurately
defines the typical characteristics.
Progressive music most importantly concentrates on
FORM. Writing a simple song with added instrumental breaks is not
progressive - that's been happening since the 1960s, and has been
common in 12" extended Disco mixes since the 1970s.
Developing what is possible in form has always
played a key role in progressive music from Progressive Jazz in the
early 1950s through Progressive Blues in the mid-late 1960s to
Progressive Rock.
It is clear from my analysis that Opeth have just
about got a handle on the old song structure and like extended
instrumental breaks as much as I like, say Iron Butterfly or the
Grateful Dead.
The focus on technique is admirable - but
concentrating on individual aspects of performance and music theory
techniques, using music technology to enhance the sonic landscape while
ignoring the wider issues of composition technique (which IS what it's
all about) is a bit simple-minded.
For a clue on progressive music composition
techniques, analyse "Nursery Cryme" or "Free Hand", from a broad
compositional perspective and live in awe. If you can definitively say
that Opeth have compositional techniques (not execution or production
techniques) which have progressed beyond those two perfect examples,
then I would frankly be amazed.
![]() Edited by Certif1ed - 19 March 2007 at 08:03 ------ Again, I don't see how he (Certified) can get away with this on a regular basis. I'd flame him more if I was more immature than I already am. I guess I'll continue to post his crap until someone other than me takes notice. |

Phil is actually the first and only person so far that I have seen explain his reasons of disliking an album in few sentences properly. edit: had to add 'properly' in the end for sentence to have the meaning I initially intended it to have. Edited by Trickster F. - March 24 2007 at 09:17 |

And more especially... myself. My CAN - Tago Mago review (which, as I like to think, is approaching the goodness of level of the album itself -- NO snide comments Zappa88) is the longest on the site, if I'm not mistaking... partly by design and partly because I really did have a lot to say. |

^ Yeah, I think the review is funny too, as I'm not a huge JT fan. But probably those who really love that stuff may get sad. But the arguments why he dislikes that album are good IMO. (I would personally rate that ***-)

Is it longer than that one Octavarium review that used to be the primary example of a superlong review?
Haha, when I have vacations I'll try to beat that record (on purpose, with an in-depth lyrics analysis or something

all kidding aside.... he does express and opinion and why he thinks so.. in the cute, cuddly way we expect from Philippe. That was my point, again covered in smartassery that being concise and direct is a good thing. |

As of my last edit... Yes, it is. It stills needs an edit or two to shut out the rambling factor (it gained about 1000 words last edit... no such antics here, I've said all I need to say, I just need to fine tune it). It's got a couple hundred on Octyvary-ugghhh. |
