Which part? Banks piano solo at the beginning, or Hackett's Les Paul solo in the middle? For me on that song, it is both.

Wow, good choices, one and all! (And the PF song is 'Comfortably Numb,' Gilmour's best studio soloing, IMO). On guitar, I would add Fripp on Requiem from 'Beat' - Frippertronics guitar soloing at its best; and, Stolt's solo a few minutes into 'A Complex Work of Art' (Kaipa). On keys, Wakeman's synth solo on CTTE (title) after the Mander pipe organ interlude; and, Emerson's organ 'squeaking' on Tarkus. On drums, Bonham's various as seen on 'The Song Remains the Same; and, Chester Thompson playing with Hackett on the Tokyo Tapes - solo after Hierophant leading into Los Endos. All great stuff...

A solo that I was surprised that I didn't see listed was Steve Howe's Clap.
Neil Peart's drum solos are definitely my favorite drum solos. However, I also enjoy Carl Palmer and Mike Portnoy drum solos quite a bit. I just recently acquired the Cream reunion concert CDs and I was definitely impressed with Toad.
Eddie Van Halen, Yngwie Malmsteen, and Steve Vai have come up with some of the better shredder solos IMHO.

My favorite guitar solo is Steve Howe's outro on Starship Trooper. Alex Lifeson's solo on Jacob's Ladder kills as well- short, but sweet.

prog: damn.. I have to admit this.. the first to come to mind.. a group I love to tease a bit . Steve Hackett- Dancing with the Moonlit Knight.
non-prog. Duane Allman - Dreams... if you know
your music... you know what I'm talking about.. oh my god...
people speak about Gilmour 'speaking' with his playing.. he's got
nothing on Allman.

Right, this is a hard one - I've got to admit I am (surprise, suprise) a bit of a Wakeman fan and I have so many 'favourite' solo's. At the moment the best 'Yes' solo must be the keyboard on the original 'Close to the Edge' track and the best solo solo (if you get me) has to be for all round class and enjoyment 'Jane Seymour.'
For guitar - well it's between Dave Gilmour, Jimmy Page, Steve Howe and Dave Colqhoun - and Mr Gilmour probably just edges it with his power and beauty on live versions of 'Comfortably Numb.'
And drums? No competition. For me it's got to be Carl Palmer and 'Tank' !

For drums, I'd go with Led Zeppelin's Moby Dick (studio and the tedious-yet-very-cool 20 minute long live version), Toad by Cream, and O Baterista by Rush (off of Rush In Rio, best drum solo, studio or otherwise, ever).
Guitar....
1) Stairway To Heaven, Led Zeppelin
2) Free Bird, Lynyrd Skynyrd
3) Eruption, Van Halen
4) Comfortably Numb, Pink Floyd
5) Highway Star, Deep Purple
There are also a host of others from guitar, drum, and other instruments that I won't list for time and laziness.  |

I like Close to the Edge's, Gates of Delirium's and Siberian Khatru's keyboard solos and ALL the solos that Keith Emerson played before 1975.
