I love Rick Wakeman's 70s albums but there's a high 'cheese' content. Sometimes I think he really should have had a think for a bit, as lyrics were simply not his strong point, imo.
![]() I had a Magellan album, I think it was 'Impending Ascension' and I found it unbearably cheesy, I'm afraid. Pure bombast and no subtlety whatsoever, imo. Whether their other albums are like that I couldn't comment. The only Dream Theater songs I find cheesy are their ballads. 'Octavarium' was full of them, and I don't go a bundle on 'Another Day' or 'Through Her Eyes', especially the awful Whitney Houston nonsense at the start of it. WHAT were they thinking? ![]() Uriah Heep's 'Magician's Birthday' piles on the cheese. Now I love them and they are one of my fave bands, but I think that track was more excessive than progressive and was arguably a step too far- not a favourite of mine, doesn't have the sublime beauty of 'The Spell' or the sheer power of 'Pilgrim', their other epics bookending 'The Magician's Birthday'. |

I think I get the idea, but my English is leaving me here. What is the proper definition of "cheesy"? |

I think that with the beginning of "Through Her Eyes" they were trying to emulate DSOTM's Great Gig in the Sky.....there are actually quite a few Pink Floyd nods on that album hmmmm.....cheese.... Symphony X- The Odyssey (song)....it's just so overbearingly cheesy but I love it (like all their work actually) oh, and Cygnus X-1, the best cheesy Rush song ever ![]() |

^Yes, I'd say Octavarium was literally full of cheesy tracks- I Walk Beside You and These Walls anyone??? The only song I liked really was the title track. Now I would personally LOVE them if they were like that every time.
Symphony X define 'cheesy' to my ears. I rather like some of 'The Divine Wings Of Tragedy' but I have a bit of a bugbear with that 'power metal' sound- the operatic choruses etc. 'The Odyssey' had more of that than any prog, imho of course. |

Same here, it's a track that actually retains the DT sound (like the title track of the same album which is amazing, one of their best).....but DT do have their share of cheesy songs.....like Innocence Faded or Another Day (both which I enjoy) |

You're right, it must be the most gorgeous Genesis melody ever. I've adored it from Day One, but I never really understood what it's about... |
