Didn't you say at the start that KD was just noise and no melody?
 Yes, and that's what I feel for the most part. I don't like Kayo Dot's new album but I can't dispute that so many people love it. What I am saying is that it may be a great album for the sound it's going for (a sound that I think is awful) but due to the facts that I discussed it's NOT the best prog album of 2006.
It's just like if someone said your favorite album of 2006 was terrible - If that person was the ONLY one out of 1000 who holds that view, then there is a 99.99% chance he is wrong. If EVERYONE else besides you out of 1000 people say your favorite album was terrible than there is a 99.99% chance they are right. Assuming of course that they enjoy to some extent the same music you do. I own 8 post-rock albums and like most of them so it's not like I can't stand the genre. Yes, I own many prog-metal albums too. This KD album is going far away from prog metal.
We may think this Kayo Dot album was terrible and they may think Hybris is terrible but there would be more that agree with us then with them. However, since there are a large amount that do like the KD album, just because WE don't like it doesn't mean it's not an album that people that like that style should listen to.
By the way, PERSONALLY, it's not even in my top 25 for 2006. I've heard and own 28 albums from 2006 including Zaar and Mogwai which were way better than KD imho. Edited by dalt99 - February 02 2007 at 20:17 |

I agree, every subgenre here has their unforunately unknown ones. But for this I am glad we have people like Erik (for Symphonic), Chris (Syzygy), Joren, TP Yuko and Claire(for RIO/Avant), Hugues (Sean) (for everything and Folk and RIO in particular), Andrea Parentin and Andrtea Cortese, Mandy & Raffaella and Micky (for everything Italian and art-rock), Philippe, Olivier & Rico (for everything Kraut and Electronic), Honganji and Adam (Black Velvet (for anything you need you want to know about music - they're like walking encyclopedias), Jody (Progtologist), Bryan and Mike (for Prog Metal), Dick Heath (for jazz and fusion), Eetu (for Psych), Chamberry, Golden Spiral, Jimbo (for post rock), Zac M (for various genres), Atavachron and Sinkadotentree (for various genres) and I could go on and on...
Each one of these do their "work" in their field and try to let others know of the bands in the genres represented here in PA.
I think we do have some bands and topics and genres that get more exposure here and repeated discussions and I usually don't join them. But I don't see a strong inclination to Post Rock and RIO, but I do see more people willing to expose themselves to those genres, which I feel is fine.
If you look at Erik's Symphonic thread, you'll notice it has in a short time passed the RIO Drop In Centre thread, in views and replies. I think the balance is still in favour of that side. But I do see the Prog-Metal side taking over.
What we all can do, is review, discuss in the forums and generally let it be known that all those genres can be great and rewarding. We can inform people and learn ourselves of the not-so-known bands, the albums that should get attention (and here I'll mention Yugen again
 ). I do it in my I recommend thread in particular and in other threads as well (I am not too good in writing reviews, and it takes me a lot of time, which I don't have right now, due to work). What I think is a shame is when someone does not look deeper into prog to look for hidden gems. But generally, the forum members here do look and ask! for info and opinios and recommendations.
I'll mention Erik's thread again as a great source of info for people who want to know of the out-of-mainstream Symphonic Prog.
In my I Recommend thread, I try to go over all genres, cause I love them all. I mean that in every one there are many worth listening to that bring pleasure to the listener.
To sum it all up, Enjoy the music people and explore. You don't like it, move on and look for something else.

I'm surprised that "Dowsing Anemone with Copper Tongue" got number one. I love that album to death, but it's incredibly hard to get into especially tracks like "___ on Limpid Form" (one of my favorites).

I agree with you here. Mindgames' album is definitely best neo album of the year (from what I've heard), as opposed to Milliontown, which is simply "bad album" in my books.

Hmm, I already had the new Steve Hackett, Tool, and Mars Volta albums in my collection. I'm listening to the new Frost album right now, too; it's pretty good so far.
