Then you risk that your review will be deleted. A review is supposed to describe one particular album, it's not a platform for complaints.

I know that. Don't worry, read it and you'll see I review the album and make my arguments very clear. Not bashing for bashing's sake, so to speak.

I wouldn't like my review to be deleted just because I don't agree with the "album of the year"... If one of my reviews is ever deleted, I hope it would be because it's insulting, has no coherence, is just a bashing post disguised as review, or something like that.

EDIT: But you'll never see me writing like that. No unless I get intoxicated with mushrooms that weren't supossed to be eaten.

An interesting list. Cant say that I remember seeing many votes for the PFM album, but there you go.... I am surprised about the Kayo Dot album as I find Dowsing to be far inferieor to Choirs Of The Eye. Amputechture should have ended up much higher IMO.

Spending more than I should on Prog since 2005

I cannot believe Mastodon's 'Blood mountain' did not make the top 10, my choice for album of the year. Also Zero Hour's 'Specs of Pictures Burnt Beyond' for me is not far behind. A criminally overlooked album and band.

"Then, THE INCREDIBLE: MUSIC!"

awesome review, though I consider KD's album a good one(3 star in a whole). That's maybe because I like Doom and use to play that kind of music in a band

^ the last song is better than On Limpid Form, which is the weakest track. But that's no reason to bash the album, at least not for me. It fails on a high level.Wink

I gave it a spin for the first time yesterday, and even thoug I wasn't fully concentrated on the music, there were some bits that definitly stuck.

As to Kayo Dot, I was just listening to it for a second time. I really enjoyed the first three tracks and some of ____ On limpid form, but I have to say the albums looses focus and interest halfway through that song. That might not seem much, but when the two final tracks represent more than half of the album lenght, that cannot be a good thing. Hope a few more listens will do the trick...

I only have one album off that list ,the much over hyped Frost album (3 stars at best IMO).I'm just listening to some of the samples on the site and the Kayo Dot stuff would just send me to sleep to be honest while the PFM stuff sounds like the kind of boring jazz rock that the likes of Brand X chucked out in the seventies.I may get the Steve Hackett album as I like him generally. The PRR stuff sounds interesting and more up my street and I like Tool so I may get that as well.

I wish I had included a DVD Poll...I rated Fish's "Return To Childhood" second only to "Arriving Somewhere" by PT. The visual quality was surprisingly top-notch and though Mr Dick couldnt afford a 5.1 mix the sound was good too.

Of course Rush's Replay x3 was technically a reissue....

For an alternate, non-collab (and possibly more representative?) view on the Top albums of 2006, check out the Prog Archives list as voted by ALL the site members with their reviews. TMV's Amputechture is #1 by a country mile.

http://www.progarchives.com/top-prog-albums.asp?year=2006

Remember, the list on the front page is Collaborator generated, and thus voted on by old farts like me. My votes went to Prog stalwarts like Adrian Belew, Steve Hackett, Fish, and Peter Hammill.

I found it merely OK. A nice adult alternative style CD. I don't consider it Prog.

That being said, I can't wait for the new PT!

It's not Prog at all, I was referring to Blackfield's status here.

I was unsure on first play but with a few spins I have grown to love it. I am not a big fan of the first album but this is a real classy affair and I urge you to give it a few more listens.Smile

And I think their first was much better also

As for the rest, I believe that Amputecture gets placed too low, but my #1 choice Nebelnest did not show as I expected it to.

*passing the buck* It's Ghandi [sic for my lame purposes] 2's fault, he said it before me! If in doubt, always blame the second coming of Mahatma Gandhi.  He-he, ho-ho. "Evolution of democracy is not possible if we are not prepared to hear the other side" (random Gandhi quote). "Gandhi didn't believe in that stupid stuff anyway, since he was a Buddhist" (Ghandi 2 quote).

But seriously, you're right.   Post-rock (or post-metal) is more apt for Kayo Dot.  I said it could be in various categories utilising various Prog subgenre tags.  Art Rock sprung to mind first since the band is quite eclectic in terms of inspiration (but then Prog usually is), but with the latter release I'm inclined to say it's more fart than art.

However, I do think KD show significant avant Prog tendencies, particularly in the band's, I think, debut album (which is why I thought the tag fit).  I'm more familiar with the debut over the subsequent one, as I have only casually heard the second one once at an acquaintance's house as background noise and subsequent listening of samples.

You mention Nebelnest, I have yet to hear the whole album, but from what I have heard I prefer it to either KD album.  I must say, I was rather surprised to see KD's album take it since I thought their debut so much better.

Amputechture did nothing good for me, but chacun a son gout.  One man's meat is another man's poison and one man's fish is another man's poisson, as I like to say.

I like Avestin's list.  I have several of those albums and have sampled most of them and consider them to be excellent (still don't know Deluge Grander -- a big oversight as I've been meaning to check out their samples for some time -- not in the archive yet, are they?).  I would have predicted that Gargamel's album (the first album of 2006 I heard -- or was Hamster Theatre my first?) to get into the top ten earlier in the year.  Later I thought Maschera might take it (though I prefer the Gargamel).  The Nemo one is very good, but I didn't expect it to make more than the top twenty.  And of course, as I said, Zaar is my pick, but a close call.

'Twas a pretty good year year for Prog -- not up to 2003 (or 2005 or...) for my tastes from what I know, but then I probably don't know enough.  There hasn't been one year from the late 60's on that doesn't have a Progressive album I know and love -- well maybe there is, but none that I'm aware of. ;)
