One of the most intriguing and original albums for last few years "Beyond Twilight - For the Love..." is missing here... never mind

Disappointed that La Maschera Di Cera is not in the top 10. I thought that album would be a lock.
What is prog rock ?

It is music that does progress. Progressive music takes a riff, turns it inside out, plays it upside down and the other way around, and explores its potential.

Shame on me, still haven't listened to Kayo Dot. Apart from that, which I cannot comment on, totaly agree with the remaining top 5, even though Hackett might be a bit to high (i enjoyed his album, as always, but it did sound like a weaker TWTS). PRR would be my Nš1 choice (until I hear Kayo Dot, that is...)
Bigger on the inside.

Bloody great!!! My personal fave makes #5!!! Thanks Prog Ampu isn't the #1

Kayo Dot is incredible, though sometimes almost unlistenable .4 stars after all.

Nice to see Frost here. Nothing special really, but Neo in Top10 is always a surprise

Still have no PFM,Agalloch and Hackett ,but going to have soon!!!

Note: I thought PRR would beat the #1. Anyway, the list is awesome!!!

^ nevertheless you should give Kayo Dot a try: http://www.myspace.com/kayodot They definitely don't sound like any other of the "prog metal blueprints" (DT, SyX, Opeth, Tool).

Prog Metal is not for me, I'm afraid.
And I haven't heard the latest PFM yet.
But I wouldn't be surprised if the other albums on your list are overshadowed by Deluge Grander's amazing debut, which I'm hoping to review soon.

Here's to Deluge Grander's future!

I've heard six of the top 10. It's a good list, pretty accurate based on all the music I've heard that came out this year.

The only glaring omission I see is the lack of Mastodon's Blood Mountain, which was a great prog-metal release, and #4 on my own personal top 10 of all 2006 album releases, including prog and non-prog.

Congratulations to Tony R for the work put in to compile and to present the top 10, also well done to every collaborator that has offered his vote, his appreciation and so on...

I've listened (I say this for the 10th time) to incredibly little from 2006, I plan to redeem myself on that if anything remotely interesting appears in 2007, but I've got two of my favorites in the top 6-10: Milliontown and Veracious (the latter is quite a surprise for me to have made it above others).

An interesting list...but a satifying one overall I think. Though very surprised with that #4.

Have #1, #3, and #5. Will definitely try and track down the new PFM.

Personally: I would have had Hackett's higher, included Belew's, and made a few minor changes (esp since I've yet too hear two of those).

Dig me...But don't...Bury me
I'm running still, I shall until, one day, I hope that I'll arrive
Warning: Listening to jazz excessively can cause a laxative effect.

Great work Tony, and you weren't nearly as slow compiling as everyone was complaining you would be :)

I have to say that despite reading everyones votes the PFM at #2 came as a suprise. And all of my votes made the top 10 except Tunnels, big suprise there.

I think there is a slight error in your list. You probably meant to put Agalloch at #1 instead of #6. Wink

Not that bad.... No Flower Kings though...

The only one I think is really a weird selection is Agalloch's one.... man, that band HAS NO DRUMMER, the one that plays there is barely capable... We can't praise an album if there's an instrument being played at a below-average level... The songs are repetitive and truly incoherent, boring, I just can't get Agalloch.

But very good list anyway. Just one out of ten I think shouldn't be aplauded, so, very good!
