RTF, with Mahavishnu close behind, though I prefer Brand X to both.

i don't think they can be compared, they're all on that "plateau of greatness" somebody was speaking of. an concerning my favourites list, i love them all, WR just slightly more because they got me into fusion.

if anything can be compared, - these three definitely can, and mainly because they are on the same level of greatness, and in the same sub-genre
it might be difficult to choose between them; but "be compared" - yes, definitely they can

hmm, i was saying "to compare" in the meaning of comparing the quality. they can be compared in the matter of style or influence, that's right. anyway you're contradicting yourself: if three men climbing a mountain are at the moment on the same plateau, you can't compare each one's altitude, they are at the same height or the difference is not visible and, eventually, not relevant. they need to get in positions of relevant "height" difference in order to become able to compare them.

Right, I understand what you meant here, however I think that meaning of most polls here is to hear your subjective opinion about bands, in other words - "which one do you like better". But you instead are trying to make parallel with an absolutely objective matter - "which one has climbed higher". Don't you really see the difference?
If this poll had offered you the options, for example, Mekong Delta / Universe Zero / The Enid, then you could say: "I do not think they can be compared because they all are great but working in absolutely different style or genres, etc etc ..."
Anyway, there are plenty of polls here where people are trying to compare the uncomparable, but as soon as some reasonable IMO question pops up, there will always be someone stating that it can't be compared.

@ eugene: well i did go for the narrowest meaning of "comparing", but that's because the poll is very vague (just a "what's the best?" question; also, in a sense this question does encourage in the direction of "objective" "measuring" of achievements). so, from an "objective" point of view (as much as that's possible) i'll say i think they're all in the same quality league, they're too close for me (the non-specialist) to draw the exact "measures" of their achievements. from an "subjective" point of view, i'll say i like their music just the same but - i know RtF only from one album so the impression made on me is a little lighter - MO lacks some of the "emotional" content that pleases one side of my soul, but their great art and consistency amazes me (some other might say different but i find their music pretty abstract) - my WR favourite is one of my favourite albums ever and i have a strong personal relation with it, so that's a bonus for WR this being said, i finally choose Brand X

If you had asked me not too long ago, I would have said Weather Report without hesitation. Now I have to say Mahavishnu.

That's fine. All you say here makes sense. And all three (four actually) are perfectly comparable, and this is the only point I was trying to make.
