Hi, I have been viewing the site for about a year, but just registered today. My problem lately is when I get to the home page, and run a search of a band from there, it takes me to the page with all the information I requested, but from that page I can not go further. For example, if I type in "genesis" on the first page, and hit search, it then goes to a page with a list of "genesis reviews, mp3, etc" and more listed there. Then if I click one of those choices, nothing happens. For some reason I can't search here anymore. any suggestions?

Could you be a bit more explicit about the problem Hogweed? It sounds as if you are maybe going into one specific review perhaps, but it's hard to work out where the problem is without further detailed info.

Cheers

If I understand what he is saying correctly, I experienced this problem too. Basically, choosing one of the options from the page containing the search results makes loading that page so painfully slow, that you'd rather just google these same details OUTSIDE of PA for a much quicker result.

thanks for replying, but I'll try to explain it again. If I use the homepage of the archives, and go to the search box, I'll type in Genesis or whatever. Then, the next page will come up with all the items that match my query, and usually at the top of the list will be something like "Genesis-discography, mp3s reviews" and then individual album reviews, basically everything the prog archives has that matches my query. But, whatever I then click on to go read, nothing happens. I don't know if its slow or not (my browser doens't even show anything loading, so i am thinking I am having a different issue) Hope this helps, I cna't read anything on the site anymore, so i am getting nervous! thanks!

Cheers Hogweed. I just did exactly what you described myself, and it worked fine.

What browser are you using? Dial up or broadband connection?

Anyone else experiencing similar issues?

yes.

the search results are totally irelevant, i had to struggle to find a way to PF's "homepage" on the PA. normally the first shown item was the bands homepage on the PA, but this doesn't happen any more.

That's a slightly different, but still highly relevant issue. I'll get M@x to have a look.

Yes, I've found the same.  I understand why the google search engine is being used (and why it's working in this manner), but it's not nearly as effective for my purposes as the old search. I'd rather just use my google homepage for band/ album searches now.

thanks for the response. I am using Internet Explorer, and broadband. Its so frustrating, because for probably 9 months that i was actively using the site daily, no problems, but now this. I can't figure it out. The only way I can get to a bands page on the site is to use the top 100/250/500 listings of albums, and then go thru that. But if I just want to find out info fast, I can't access them the old way I described above. I'm out of ideas (of course I am not technical about these things, either, LOL) but hope I can get it resolved. I get too much enjoyment out of this site to lose out. Thanks.

Yes, I noticed about a week ago that the search function rarely turns up the band's "homepage."

This happened to me as well. I tried looking for Genesis to get to the discography and I ended up having to click on someones review to get a link to the bands page.

I have asked M@x to look at improving the priorities of the listing.

Hogwed, you can of course use the alphabetic listings, available by clicking the "Switch index" button on the home page.

thanks for all the info, I see it has been a problem for others. I will try your suggestion, and hopefully things will get working again.

The actual PINK FLOYD page in Prog Archives is only shown on Page 7 of the list of Google results if you enter "Pink Floyd" in the Search box on the Home Page.

Presumably this is because of the Google ranking algorithm's over-emphasis on the number of links to a page from other pages. I have seen evidence of this in the case of specialist Web sites that have been linked to by few, if any, other Web sites, yet they contain highly relevant (sometimes unique) information. However the Google spiders rank them very low and a search for keywords that litter the site results in the site being returned on Page 100 or whatever of the Google search results list, i.e. nowhere near the top of the list. I have found that Yahoo provides better results in such cases, so it would appear that Yahoo's ranking algorithm puts more emphasis on content and less emphasis on links from other pages than does Google's. I tend to use Yahoo first and Google second these days. (As an aside, when searching I often use a meta search engine such as Dogpile, which uses Yahoo, Google, MSN and Ask.com, but that is of no help in this particular case.)

thats interesting info, I had no idea. How would you suggest I apply this to my searches on the actual home page? Or is this a site issue that I can't really control? thanks.

I believe it's a site issue (well, a Google issue really) that you can't control.

But to get what andu was asking for -- i.e. the group's page in Prog Archives returned first in the list returned by the search -- there is a way using the existing Google search box on this site's Home Page, albeit slightly inconvenient.

If you want to find the page for Pink Floyd, type "pink floyd biography" (including the quotation marks) into the search box on the Home Page, and the only result will be the Pink Floyd page. Similarly for other groups.

Nice workaround Fitz.Thumbs Up

Of course the easiest way is to use the alphabetic indexes, accessed via the "Switch index" button on the home page.

thanks for the info, Fitz! I tried it and indeed the pink floyd link came up as the first item......however, (and you knew there had to be a however ;)... ) it still doesn't allow me to go to that page once i click that link.....well, like the admin said, I will use the alphabet list of bands on the homepage by switching index, until they get around to fixing the bugs. thanks!
