Straight out of memory -- "Sibiriada" (Konchalovsky), "Urga" (Mikhalkov), "Okhota na lis" (Abdrash*tov). At least first two are highly recommended also as films. The music, of course, by Artemiev. There are plenty of other movies with his music also.

If you don't ask - you don't get. I have 6 albums by Kuryokhin. Find them very interesting, but a bit repetitive. "The Rich's Opera" and "Sparrow Oratorium" are his best IMO. Also have his soudtracks for Mister Designer, Two Captains-2 plus his "Tragedy in Rock" and "Popular Science" with Henry Kaiser. He was highly acclaimed in the west, but went practically unnoticed in his own country, which is famous for ignoring it's own talents.
I also heard Kuryokhin's work with BG, but disliked it.
Anyway - highly recommended artist!

The few Russian and other old USSR bands I have in my collection,  appear to be released on CD by the Music Boheme Records label based in Moscow. So their catalogue seems to be one worth checking out.
The best eclectic music on the Web,8-11pm BST/GMT THURS.

LOST WORLD - the fragment of working process(taken from the official web-site)

Soloviev and his flute came to visit Didorenko, who was deeply and securely submerged in the recording of a new composition. Upon seeing his friend, Didorenko happily pressed a microphone against his throat and said: ”Play this: E-D-D-E”. Soloviev, unabashed, took out the flute, a piece of staffed paper, a pencil, settled comfortably on the sofa and got ready to write.

D. (indignantly) There’s nothing to write! Just play E-D-D-E.

S. Wait-wait-wait, what do you mean E-D-D-E? I can’t just up and play E-D-D-E.

D. You can, too. Otherwise why did you graduate the conservatory?

S. And post-graduated as well.

D. Anyway, you should play here, first E-D-D-E, then G-F-F-G, then higher and more notes. Each time, higher and more notes, get it?

S. What notes?

D. Just notes, any notes.

S. You sure?

D. Absolutely.

S. Here you go, then!

Didorenko, rubbing hands, leaps to the computer and hits “record”. Soloviev plays a few notes and stops, pensive.

D. Great!

S. I doubt it.

D. Sounds cool!

S. Rubbish.

D. What the doctor ordered!

S. Totally sucks.

Pause.

S. Well, is it on?

D. What for? We’ve already done it.

S. (in disbelief) Really? No, c’mon, wait, I’ll play one more time.

D. No-no-no.

S. Are you drunk?

D. I’m telling you, it’s all fine.

S. (yells) Let me play again, you are idiot, flute is out of tune, notes all wrong!

D. (doubtfully) Sounds OK as it is to me. All right, an extra take, just in case.

Recording on. Soloviev plays. Stops.

S. (satisfied) Now we’re talking!

D. (unconvinced) Yeah?

S. (confident) Of course!

D. I dunno, I think it was better the other time.

S. That other time, I played total rubbish. Now, at least it makes sense.

D. None whatsoever. Do it again.

S. I don’t know what’s not to like… OK.

Recording on. Soloviev is not playing.

D. Well?

S. So what do I play?

D. (exasperated) No idea. It’s all done already.

S. Yeah, I think so. Second take is awesome.

D. First take is perfect.

Akimov. (comes back from the kitchen, chewing) That’s it, then! We’ll take take one part one, and take two part two. And we’ll start mixing.

S. Thank God. Just make the flute really quiet, so it can’t be heard. It really sucks.

D. Flute’s great! But do make sure one can hear the guitar and bass. And the violin. And the keyboard, too.

A. Don’t worry guys! (Turns on drums, top volume). So how’s balance?

S. Super. A little less flute, though.

A. What flute? There isn’t any flute.

S. Aha. I guess all’s cool then.

A. Let’s even out those drums first. (Puts on headphones, becomes immersed in sound of bass drum).

D & S sit in silence for a while, then exchange meaningful glances, get up, and tiptoe to the kitchen to boil water for dumplings.

Interesting stuff so far guys. I am curious about a few artists/bands:

Yevgeni Yevtushenko - a poet who did an album around 1980 called CONFESSION.

Zhurbin - Orpheus and Eurydice. This is supposedly a rock opera that was pretty successful in the USSR. My question would be how PROG is it?

Alexander Gradsky - poet who did some synthesizer albums said to be prog. I heard "La Vie Immediate" from mid-80s and it was not so great, but maybe the stuff from the 70s / early 80s are of more interest?

Giedrius Kuprevicius - Lithuanian who did two "important" rock operas in the 70s, but again, are they interesting to a prog fan?

Voskresenie - obscure "guitar psych" from early 80s... any good?

As for me, I will mention Samkha and Epos, two fairly good bands from the late 80s / early 90s on CD from Boheme.

Regards,
Sean

"Gusliar" is their most progressive effort.
First 4 albums are very good but have not been released on CD till now. 2 compilations by "Melodiya" label contain many tracks from these albums.
My other personal favourite is the album "For The Whole of the War" (again, it has not been released on CD).
And there are many bizarre compilations mixing songs from different periods (and often varying in sound quality). Visit the Discography section of the site http://vma-pesnyary.com/discograph/discograph.php, it can help you to choose the right CD to start.

IMO the best are:

no.Not Prog, not interesting.

It's not that Prog, it's a good piece of Music. From Russian rock-operas I'd recommend you "Juno and Avos" and "The Star and the Death of Hoakin Murieta"(btw, Gradsky participates here as long as I know).BTW, Russian Prog-Metal band EXTROVERT use to perform it when they were accompaniators in Irkutsk's Musical theatre

Well, Gradsky is a Must if you are interested in a Russian music and culture as a whole. He's not Prog, but he has incredible voice

Never heard of him. I know that Russian Art-Rock band DIALOG use to play two 30-40 min long pieces on Baltic poet's lyrics...forgot his name, sorry.

They would probably die laughunig from what you've written about them! They neither psych nor anything worthy. If you check the first page of this thread, you'll notice, that most of Soviet Rockers were obsessed with lyrics and pay little attention to musical side(kinda "bards with electro-guitars").Well, Voskresenie - typical example of that kind of music.

If you need Russian Prog recommendations, just PM me!

Spacibo za otvet!

I'm not sure. Garion might have, but I don't know if he archived the music or just began letting PA know about the band. Yes. The details are being worked out for coming to Baja Prog. (you know visas must be obtained, etc) There are a lot of great bands playing their, so it is an honor to have been invited.

Gradsky never participated in "The Star and the Death of Joakin Murieta". The album has been recorded by the band ARAKS with some guest singers.

Gradsky released, in the beginning of 80s, his own rock-opera, "Stadion" ("The Stadium"), dedicated to the events in Chile, 1973. Many Soviet rock and pop-stars have been involved in this project.
Those who interested can listen lots of Gradsky albums here: http://www.russiandvd.com/store/person.asp?type=artist&id=4962.
Better start with "Zolotoe star'e" ("Oldies Goldies"), tracks 1 - 15.
