Rhapsody - Dawn of Victory - Holy Thunderforce:
... Face me evil b*****d, smell the hate of angels Glory, pride and bloodshed Cowards and beholders, rapers of my wisdom mix of dust and bones Go back to your abyss, Algalord will not fall but your heads will soon roll Test the blade of heroes, fury of the thunder hit my golden shield ... |

Yeah, Rhapsody is what I call the epitomy of cheesiness. If their lyrics and music doesn't convince you (and I don't see how it couldn't) then you have to check out the band photos and CD booklets.
If you though "Roquefort" was the smeliest cheese there is, then you clearly haven't checked out Rhapsody. |

Steps to appreciating (well... at least tolerating):
1) Get over yourself. 2) Realize that the point of metal is to be over the top. 3) If it seems cheesy, it's supposed to be cheesy. 4) Metal usually becomes bad when it's taken too seriously. |

The point of metal isn't to be over the top...sure, if you're talking hair metal and kiss and stuff like that, but prog metal wasn't designed with the idea of `hey, lets make a new type of music that's completely over the top!!' ...it's just an unfortunate side effect of many metal bands... and metal doesn't get bad when it's taken seriously...how can you truly appreciate something if you don't take it seriously, anyway? |

Music has always been a matter of energy to me. On some nights I believe that a car with the needle on empty can run 50 more miles if you have the right music very loud on the radio. Hunter S Thompson

^exactly. Like Qui-Gon Jim said: "There's always a bigger fish". Or applied to this situation: "There's always a cheesier band".

Well, the problem with modern progressive metal bands is that they do not produce something which could be referred to as progressive, progression to musical ideas and sounds. Most bands, stick with the past, and play what has been played already, presenting it as original, only with additional technique and supergained distortion.
I think progressive music, lost its essence, when lenghthy guitar/keyboard solos and extravagant technique was identified as progressive. |

That's because you're looking in the wrong direction. Please don't make blind generalisations about genres if you don't know much about them. |

Agreed. I never understood power metal until I talked with a bunch of guys on a forum about why they liked the music. Fans of power metal won't disagree that the music is cheesy...but they will say "so what if it is?" That's when I started to respect the genre.
Power metal is great cheesy music with (sometimes laughably) interesting themes, energy and positivity. Not all music has to take itself so seriously. Even bands like FZ, Mr. Bungle and Samla Mammas Manna often admittedly do silly things, but still keep a serious intellectualism about their musical composition. Power Metal is sometimes refreshing because it's free from this mentality.

I'm an exception, I'm a big fan of 80's metal particularly thrash but there are very few prog metal bands that interest me. |

I think a lot of the problem is the clash between metal and prog mentalities. Imagine this conversation between two prog metal heads:
Beavis: Heh, heh, this song rocks !!!
Butthead: Yeah it's in 15/8 time.
Beavis: Yeah, cool, heh, heh.
Butthead: Heh heh.
Beavis: Tool kicks a@#$ !!!
Butthead: Heh, heh. You said tool.
Both:Heh, heh, heh, heh.
Seriously, I liked a lot of metal until around 1995, but something changed-there's just no good melody writing in today's metal (prog and otherwise). And maybe I am getting a bit older- but today's metal sounds like someone knocked over the china cabinet. Edited by Thyme Traveler - March 25 2007 at 10:37 |

Fire up the flux capacitor ! We're taking this Delorean through all four dimensions.
What is the future of prog ? Genesis reunion ? I'm not telling! That could upset the thyme/space continuum. |

Well, I don't particularly like metal or heavy metal. It just doesn't work for me. I don't doubt the skill of the bands who play that kind of music, I just don't think it sounds good.
I do however like prog metal quite a bit. It goes beyond just playing loud and aggressive music (Not to belittle non-prog metal). |

I find prog metal repetitious ... and I cannot truly explain why. It is simply a feeling of mediocrity I get... I must explain this somehow.

When I listen to progressive music it is mostly for just plain musical enjoyment and to take me away to a better place. I admit, I enjoy some Metallica, its a guilty pleasure of mine (the symphonic metal album) but I usually just listen to that to get the energy out of my system. So when it comes to listening to prog metal, I actually do think it is pretty good but I'll have to be in the right mood.

I'm 100% with you on that stance, the nu-metal movement critically wounded good metal and the modern melodic and power metal movements finished it off and urinated on it's corpse. Of course that's my rather vulgar and graphic opinion on the matter anyway, I'm such an 80's metal nerd =P Edited by FruMp - March 25 2007 at 12:33 |
