Camel should be in the big 5. They did alot more than Crimson did in the 70s. I think they write very good music, while Crimson's music doesn't quite excite me apart from In the wake of Poseidon and some of Lizard. I must say that Mirage and Snowgoose are a bit ovarrated. I think Camels first album is better than both and the late 70s stuff is underated. Nude is cool to. Here is my big 5 in order of greatness

Tull
Camel
Gentle Giant
YES
Genesis

Thankyou :)

I hear ya.

I really am dissapointed and amazed I can't hear what people who love a lotta the same stuff I do see in this band.

Kills me.

I always loved their album covers. Sad as it may sound, it kinda sucks to love the covers and not like the band. HOHOHO. Prog-kid thing.

Well... Anyhoo. I'm not gonna stop trying.

I am going to take my yearly pilgrimage with the wife to the Dandanong Mountains(Victoria Australia) in the Spring... I get to do NOTHING for about 11-12 days but sit in the jaccuzzi and smoke cigars, listen to music for fun(not listen to it for work - which is what I do the rest of the year), wander the rainforest and generally just eat too much. I have been even known to smoke some pot when I'm down there, something that hasn't been a part of my 'regular life' since the early 80's... We got a pretty killer stereo in the cabin and I'm gonna take SnowGoose and Moon Madness and try again. I really am.

Wish me luck, and best regards to all the Camel fans. I envy you and am hoping to join you one day.

SM.

I have a different view of Camel to those already expressed. I find 20 per cent of what they do to be absolute genius , forty per cent to be mediocre and forty per cent to me sounds like they are just jamming on to fill up the record. Probably they had to rely too heavily on Latimer.

Yes Genesis and Floyd have an advantage over the other prog bands because they seem to have a longer list of composers and more members capable of genius. That to me is why they are the top 3 in prog history with ELP 4th. Camel , King Crimson Tull  and Mike  Oldfield are part of the second tier because they rely so heavily on one member imho
How wonderful to be so profound

Moonmadness (the only Camel album I own so far) is amazing! Can't wait to get more. They jumped to my top 5 favorite bands.

I have their three classic album downloaded. I found them boring, except for Lunar Sea and Lady Fantasy. The Snow Goose was almost boring all the way through except for a few funky parts that I liked.

Did you read any reviews and look at stuff before you got them? I just picked up a Cd because I've heard the name. Didn't have any expectations and I was amazed.

I heard Lady Fantasy and loved it. So I got their stuff and was dissapointed. Maybe you need to be high to appreciate it.

No that would be wrong. I wasn't high when I listened to them. I was wide awake. And in full mental health, so don't go asking about that!

LOL

Maybe I just give the another try. They seem like a pretty good band judging from what everyone says about them, they just didn't do anything for me.

This band are Premier League without doubt; in fact, my favourite band. Certif1ied has hit the nail on the head as to why some rubbish them: they're not pretentious. Exactly the same reason some rubbish my second favourite band, Mostly Autumn, in fact.

I rubbish Mostly Autumn because I think they are boring and, yes, rubbish!

I picked up The Snow Goose in the sales yesterday for a fiver along with a Dream Theater 2 live CD. I like Camel for the melody, musicianship and composition. I don't feel they are a band that knock you backwards but they are very good. Not as good as ELP,Yes,Genesis,Pink Floyd ,Rush,King Crimson or Tull but very worthy all the same. The Channel Four programme aired several years ago about prog rock (fronted by Bill Bailey) had them just sneaking into the top ten if I remember corrrectly.Seems about right to me.

I think there are two reasons Camel are under-rated. First off they were late-comers to an already crowded UK scene and secondly they were a bit dull live!

I personally love the band and got the first album when it was released. Like most people I think they have three great albums in Snow Goose, Moonmadness & Mirage but I have always kept up with their output and own a full set. I also saw the band live a few times in the 70's and they were pretty boring especially when compared to the competition.Lower reaches of 1st division would probably be about right. Thumbs Up

Wow, lets get this right.

The Super Seven are as follows:

Yes
ELP
Gentle Giant
King Crimson
Van Der Graaf Generator
Camel
Genesis

The Great Progressive Oriented Groups of the 70s.

Jethro Tull
Rush
Moody Blues
Renaissance (arguable) they could be in the Super Seven
Barclay James Harvest
Kansas (arguable)

I'm acquainted with Camel, partly. I know the song "Mystic Queen", I have the whole Mirage on a cassette, and I listened to the half of Snow Goose on radio (don't know, however, which half).

They seem to me "faceless", in some sense. As if they lack their own style. They sound like X here and like Y there, but never (to my ears) like something specific, which has to be called "like Camel".

And, much more important -- they sound (for me) as if they are full of good ideas, but these ideas aren't put together into melodies. Their music seems to me discrete (somehow different parts of pieces are unrelated to one another), or directionless.

It is clear to me after 18 odd months at this site that 3 bands are the most universally popular PinK Floyd yes and Genesis . I don't see the need for so much discussion when something is already clear.

Good rating - I concur. As with many others, Camel is an under-rated prog band. At times though, they can sound almost 'techno-pop,' so maybe that is what keeps them from '1970s prog' greatness....

Most certainly not.. But it does heighten the experience.
