The unfocused debut or the sell out Collins era. Which do you prefer?

I bought "From genesis to revelation" and i think that i really gave it a chance. Actually, a few. I almost like "that's me", but i don't even know if that belongs on the album, i think it's a single or something.. the order of songs is pretty messed up on my disc :)

Got to go with From Genesis To Revelation here. Although it is youthful and, in many ways, undeveloped, it still shows glimpses of that special Genesis magic. If you take away the superfluous strings and just listen to the actual melodies, you will find the songs are very much Genesis songs, and Gabriel already sounds in fine voice, even though the band were only 18 or 19 when they recorded it.
Plus, Anthony Phillips is with them, so that raises it above anything post-Hackett, or at least post-Duke, in my opinion.Clap

Phil Collins is a great drummer & composer but he's one of the most sold out musicians of all time. I think the debut is better than the late Genesis

From Genesis To Revelation. There are tons of good melodies on that album, and they're sung by Mr. Gabriel!. No contest.

silly poll really......Abacab onwards is 5 studio albums, FGTR is one, although it is beautiful all the same, Abacab is a great album ( crucify me), Genesis - Mama is a GREAT album ( crucify me some more) , IT is AWFUL and WCD is mixed as is CAS. So if you had to take just the best from those five studio albums v the debut I would settle for all of them really, blessed to be part of the Genesis eras!!!!

The original FGTR was marred with overproduction ( strings and horns ). It sounded very much like flavour of the month... Take away the strings and the horns as they did in Archives 1 and you have some very palpable first time compositions. BUT does not compare with SOME of the tracks on Genesis' later albums.

First off don't just jump on the bandwagon and scream sellout about Phil because they went in another musical direction.  They don't owe you anything.  If anything, you should be praising, Phil, Tony, and Mike because of the music they contributed to this world.  Who do you think you are to judge a great musician like Phil and turn on him like that.  I voted for Abacab and on because even though I prefer their earlier stuff, there were definitely shining moments on all these albums.  Abacab is almost all good.  Mama album has its first side.  Invisible Touch has Land of Confusion, Tonight, Tonight, Tonight, Domino, and The Brazilian.  We Can't Dance has Jesus He Knows Me, Driving the Last Spike, Dreaming While You Sleep, and Fading Lights.  Those are my favorites off the post-Duke albums.

PS If you still want to follow everybody else and scream sellout, say that Phil, Tony, and Mike sold out because they all did it together.

I can't answer this. I like them both. Maybe not as much as the great season, but still. If I have to, I'll vote FGtR, but only because of Gabriel. So I won't, because it wouldn't be fair for the other choise.

Abacab and onwards is much better than their debut. The debut is good and all but the pop songs top it by far IMO. I think it isn't comparable. I'm not a Gabriel sellout though I prefer his era by far.

And I'm really sick of people saying it's all Phil's fault... It was a team effort.

RIP in bossa nova heaven.

not voting because I dislike both

it seems to me that time spent trying to squeeze enjoyment out of a band's lesser works could be better used listening to the best albums of less well-known bands. I suppose I'll have to suffer and never again experience the filler works of maestro collins and axe lord rabin, and so forth etc

From Abacab onwards, with some reluctance.

The debut is strangely charming, and I dont dislike it, but Genesis recorded about five excellent songs from Abacab onward, and no 'excellent' songs on the debut. In my very humble opinion..
Ultimately bored by endless ecstasy!

The debut sucks ! Even the band members have disowned as being their attempt at being Pop songwriters as guided by the almighty record company.

FGTTR by far.

Not a prog album at all, but they had several good reasons:

  1. They were high school kids trying to find an identity guided by a not very professional manager who wanted to make them a hit machine and wasn't able to make sufficient advertising.
  2. Despite this fact, FGTTR has some of the nicest Banks piano moments and Peter Gabriel sounding less proffesional but clear and purest than ever.
  3. Already they were more advanced than most mainstream bands.
  4. They improved radically in their next album, so that was only an introductory phase.
  5. ABACAB was the beginning of the end, after W&W everything was progressively downhill.
