You should try real earlier stuff which means Seventies rooted like Time Honoured Ghosts, Octoberon or Live Wink

The store I went to had Time Honored Ghosts and Octoberon. I'm not sure why I chose XII. So maybe Time Honored Ghosts next time.  I'm not sure why XII didn't do much for me ... sonically it's right up my alley.  So I'll pick up the other one and get sufficiently liquored up and see what happens.
 
On a side note, I'm really gonna miss Tower Records.  No bricks-and-mortar store in the DC area carried more prog, and I'm still of the age where browsing the bins is part of the experience.  Since they announced their closing and started discounting their stock, the wife and I've spent at least $500 stocking up.  It seems as though every other prog-head in the area is hitting the store too.  I picked up Camel's Stationery Traveller on my last trip, and I really like that.  It was the last Camel album in stock, and I had nothing by them.

When I was in Toronto for a holiday a few years ago, there was also a Tower Records store, I have bought a lot of Rush remastered CD's there Approve
About BJH, the Eighties BJH had a more polished and predictable sound, in my opinion the Seventies BJH sounded more compelling and elaborate and the Mighty Tron was omnipresent Thumbs Up

Good luck at your next try... you seem to have such a lot of "good will" to get into BJH so nevermind if it doesn't happen, tastes are different and it's alright anyway, you're a fine pal !Clap

Well, John & Woolly are back from their little jaunt into Italy & Greece. Word is they debuted a new song called 'The Light At The End Of The World' [sounds like a Woolly title but not sure] which is a very encouraging move because it suggests John may well go ahead to record some new material after all. Haven't heard it, but there is a chance it may be put onto their MySpace page.

It seems the intention now is to release live CD and DVD from this recent tour.

Woolly's other band - Mæstoso - have been laying down more tracks in his absence, so hopefully he will reconvene with them shortly and we can hope for a new album in the new year.

Let's hope so. Some fans have been worried that Lees' commitment to new material and the band in general didn't seem as enthusiastic as Woolly's.

Just got the Eclectic remasters of 'Face To Face' and 'Welcome To The Show'. Still like the former a lot and nice to have the CD back in print, and I quite like most of Welcome To The Show, despite some dodgy John Lees songs. Prefer Face To Face, though.

NEWS: John & Woolly won an italian award for songwriting... that's justified, don't you think ? But what's really making me... Les is going to play "The World goes on" at his december shows ! Let's hope his voice will do it justice, but that's a definate great choice many have waited for... good idea after too many non-good ideas...

I only ever had one album by them, but I loved it, and am considering getting the remaster.
And that album is - GONE TO EARTH, wonderful stuff!

BJH is amazing.  I have four of their albums. 

 
They are the masters of melody. 
 
Everyone is Everybody Else is my favorite by them. 
 
Amazing, Memorable Melodies.  "See You, See Me" has to be one of the best melodies off all time. 
 
Octerbon is fantastic as well. 
 
Time Honoured Ghost is great too, It sounds like an Eagles's record from begibibg to end. 
 
"Sweet Jesus" is so similar to "Take it To the Limit" its not even funny. 
 
Both of albums came out at the same time,l I dunno whi ripped off who.

yep, and One of These Nights (1974) came before Rock and Roll Star (1976) ...Embarrassed
 
I recommend to all who still haven't listened to, Once Again in its recent EMI's remastered reissue. It's a great gem!
 
Another EMI's remastered I love is Baby James Harvest. So many excellent bonus tracks. Of the many also Medicine Man single version!Tongue

Just thought I would add something to my last post - I have indeed now got 'Gone To Earth', remastered. And it is really superb!
It's been a long, long time since I heard this album, though I still possess the original vinyl with the great cover and sleeve.
The bonus tracks, for the most part, are good too. Two B sides, which are decent, and a good live version of 'Medicine Man', which appears to be one of their classics, though it's the first time I have heard it.
The other two bonus tracks are single edits of tracks already on the album, and I could do without those. They are harmless though, and the whole package is, overall, great!

Buy it but try to get "Live Tapes", "Octoberen" and "XII", too... at least... and "Revival" andandand

what a coincidence...I just listened TURN OF THE TIDE, now listening to RING OF CHANGES. That's my FIRST introduction to BJH, and probably, they're not much in my taste. I hope their earlier stuff less that POPPISH (I can borrow debut and Baby Ja,es from a friend...should I?). From what I heard and hear right now - a mix between new wave/pop rock/AOR and a little bit of Art Rock. Considering velodies...I prefer Marillion and Camel as best melodic bands ever

^ No, they are not too representative of BJH at their best. Very 80s soft rock- I do however like their last 80s album, Face To Face, a lot. I recommend 'Once Again', 'Live', 'Octoberon' and 'Gone To Earth' myself.

Everything between their debut album and Live Tapes is wonderful but, as I stated before, I prefer their live work, especially Live, one of the most Mellotron drenched and compelling symphonic prog albums ever released (also beautiful vocals and flowing, often sensitive guitar play) Clap
