I've checked out a bit of l'ensemble Raye, they are a French Swiss band who perform regularly with a relatively commercial (& well-funded) dance group called Movers, and do mostly music for other theatre projects as well. the bits I've heard are rather on the tame & cutesy side for my taste, but I wouldn't want to discourage anyone from checking it out. Another French Swiss band from the 90s in this vein was Nimal, and I like what I've heard, but it's hard to find albums, their cuts on myspace.com are really good.

Nimal is very good abd are already here on PA (under RIO, where they should be).
 
As for L'ensemble; I have heard a few of their tracks and I agree with RoyalJelly. I think it dies not have much to do with RIO/Avant.

Yes, I did some research recently, and all the reviews I read made it sound like it's not quite my cup of tea, as it were - You're observations just seconded my inclination to explore no further, so thanks for the info RJ.

I also want to go to RIO Fest, grrr.  Can someone personally fly me there, arrange my accomodation and fly me back again?

It's the thought of travelling that puts me off.

Yole, Seamus and Bise de Buse are releases on Musea. They are all French.
Quaker are from Argentina and their album is released on Viajero Inmovil Records
 
As for Yole: I think they are not part of ZAR but more of the symphonic field as can be evidenced in the Musea band page - http://musea.musearecords.com/ext_re_new_releaseselect.php?np=34168
"YOLE is the name of a young French band that uses, aside from the usual rock instruments plus keyboards, a whole array of traditional instruments such as the sitar, the flute and the tablas. The group has created his own brand of ethnic Progressive rock, influenced on one hand by the masters of the Seventies (GENESIS, CAMEL, FOCUS...), and on the other hand by Indian and Eastern music. Bise De Buse (Musea):
"BISE DE BUSE is the name of a French band, that was created in Strasbourg in 1975. Its roots are to be found in the Sixties and Seventies rock, mixed with traditional music and contemporary composers (VARESE, LIGETI...). The musicians are also inspired by the Progressive rock scene (Especially the Canterbury School with the likes of HENRY COW ou autre NATIONAL HEALTH...) and European jazz music (Jan GARBAREK, Eberhard WEBER...). "Joue Sa Musique" is the one and only album of the band, recorded in 1981 by a trio (Keyboards, cello & saxophone) with two guests: Louis MERLET on violin, and GONG's saxophone player Didier MALHERBE. It's an acoustic music, with some synthesizers sounds, nine experimental tracks (plus four bonus, including the famous GONG cover "You Can't Kill Me"), with sometimes improvised sequences. Nothing does crazy like French experimental music, but some of it wouldn't have been done in the first place if it wasn't for Frank Zappa. From the opening vocals on the album, it's evident that, vocally, the intent is satirical and humorous (although most of this is lost on me, due to the language), and the falsetto is typical of Frank and co., especially in the "Baby Snakes" days. MBF have a guitars/sax/flute/bass/drums instrumental line up and there is plenty of room for instrumentals once the initial "13'20 D'Happiness" is over. "N.S.K." shows strains of "Legend" period Henry Cow, with more falsetto vocals, and some very nice drumming. I think it's about two minutes into this track that you hear one of the first of several instrumental jams on the album, definitely what make this piece compulsory. Brilliant drumming, a chance for some really nice solos, including bass. A Canterbury-like flavor permeates, subtly similar to early Caravan's jams, a great piece of music. The album really escalates in quality from here (don't let the first track put you off.) "H.B.H.V"'s slight Happy the Man feel is quite captivating, although the scaling is slightly off-kilter, and when the lead guitar kicks in, you start to realize how much Gong is going on here as well. The last two tracks continue at an incredibly high level of energy, the music just gets better and better. No doubt there were some RIO connections going on, there's some excellent playfulness here that only the best musicians master, an interplay that is on an unusually high level. A great one-shot, no doubt, recommended to fans of RIO, Jazz, and Canterbury.

I'm not sure whether you can buy straight from a store (vinyl), but I think if you would be checking places like ebay you will be finding what you want.

"Brand new and third album by the '70s French underground free-rock cult band Mahogany Brain. Some Cocktail Suggestions (March 2005) is the logical and inevitable prolongation of the first two albums, With (Junk-Saucepan) When (Spoon-Trigger) (December 1970 - released in 1971) and Smooth Sick Lights (June 1972 - released in 1977), all in all the third shutter of a trilogy and which could be entitled: 'Mahogany Brain or how to play Russian roulette in the artificial paradises.' Thirty-five years for an unexplainable trilogy. However, if one symbolically looks at the first album on Futura as 'the injection of drugs' (the true original record cover was a photograph showing an arm with a syringe and following the stop to publish the famous stereotype for reason of censure of the time, the group chose an entirely black cover as a mourning). The second on Pôle (with the title wink in 'Sister Ray') would be rather 'the action' as if the track headlight suggests which opens the album Green Winter of Revolvers which is the soundtrack of the crazy short film of Michel Bulteau 'Main Line.' Mahogany Brain always developed a music radical, unforeseeable, hard, voluntarily unfinished, and with this album, they continue the adventure even further: decomposition of the music, recomposition of the juxtaposed voices, artistic blur, collages, mad guitars, all very amalgamated in a magma broken rock'n'roll. Mahogany Brain was created during the summer 1970, and was composed by two central personalities, the alter ego Michel Bulteau (leader and founder of the group) and Patrick Geoffrois (the man without whom Mahogany Brain could never have existed). Writer, film maker, Bulteau also carried out five albums in solo (whose Rinçures on Fractal in 1999) he's the last of the electric poets and his meeting with Geoffrois was also electric - Bulteau created a rock band but it is Geoffrois which created the dynamics of the group. Geoffrois was a sharp sectional view, and he recall a little the revolted and destroying spirit of a certain Peter Laughner (Rocket From The Tombs), he will join later the group of James Chance & the Contortions in New York at the end of the '70s or he will sow the discord besides! Two complementary strong energies and spontaneousness, the process was engaged. Mahogany Brain is an atypical group in the Parisian underground, they play with their tripes and as with their veins, it is an experience out of the limit, not-conventional, with only one concert in all their history, and probably the most subversive formation as there was to see in France! Mahogany Brain were one of the strange and most primitive French avant-underground rock groups in the 70s. Their first album on Futura in 1971 is one of those mythical records that nobody has heard. Smooth Sick Lights was their 2nd album which was supposedly "recorded in an afternoon of June, 1972," but was not released by the Pole label until 1977. The group consisted of Michel Bulteau (vocals, bass), Patrick Geoffrois (guitar), Mine (guitar, maracas), Jean-Pierre Gardille (drums), Adeline (vocals) & Thomas Messagier (guitar). Their sound was naive and cathartic -- atonal guitar wailings, free-rock percussion and a beautiful continuation of the spirit of "Sister Ray". The opening track, "Green Winter of Revolvers" is one on the classic grunts of no-wave-ish slash & mumble. [It evidently is the soundtrack to a movie called Main Line which we could use more information about.] "Silkskin Dawn" is a superb DIY-punk-ish rank with Adeline's vocals that seems quite unnatural for a 1972 origin. "Burning the Vibes" is a 22-minute non-LP bonus track of throbbing bass, murk and background sound that finishes off the set in fine, confusing fashion. The whole thing has an out of time pounding flair that's quite unique and it's great to see this become widely available.

As you know I am now focusing on narrowing the gaps in prog music frmo France and Japan, and this band and the other "suburban" band you mentioned earlier are my next "research topics".
