Pretty good Jazz-Zeuhl as I seem to remember avers. Haven't heard it for a few years and don't own a copy however. Will have to check out the Mio label more. Seems they are reissuing a number of hidden gems!

Yes, they did release some good stuff. I recently bought the Decibel - Fiat Lux boxset which Mio too reissued. However they have broken up and are no longer active. Until a while ago you could still buy albums from their website (Meidad Zacharia the ex-manager and a very knowledgeable man in prog was still doing the sales), but now their website is down and when I asked Meidad about purchasing he said he had still some Mio stuff left and that he would still sell it, only his Paypal account was not active so I looked elsewhere for it. And that actually proved good, since I found it on Big Balloon for 25$ instead of 40$.
You can find Mosaic on Big Balloon for 10.8$ or something like that.

Decibel's next incarnation was Nazca - an amazing band
Nazca - Nazca SKU NAJA 001 At last a reissue of these greatly sought-after Mexican rarities! This is their first album. Nazca were a mid 80's Mexican band who used the aura & instrumentation of early Univers Zero (violin/viola, piano, oboe/bassoon, bass & drums) and came up with a sound that was influenced by 1313, but not as dark, more improvisationally based, and also uniquely their own. A minor classic of the RIO/neo-classical school. Nazca - Estacion De Sombra SKU NAJA 002 At last a reissue of these greatly sought-after Mexican rarities! This is their 2nd album. I have heard Nazca before, but I don't have a proper album yet. I am enjoying Decibel very much. Before I added them, Guillermo (Memowakeman, the Mexican attache of PA) met and talked with Carlos Alvarado of Decibel (and also Nazca, no?). Pretty cool, cause he gave us info for their inclusion.
Anywaym I think Memo can elaborate on Nazca more than I can.
Hey Claire and Yuko, I ordered today the Debile Menthol from ReR. The double cd with both albums. I also ordered the Ec Nudes album. (I will order that Dannubians from Wayside next month I believe). I hope to add Debile to PA towards the end of November/early December. Am a bit busy this next two weeks to do it, but as soon as I am more available, I'll get to it.
I also want to add L'ensemble Raye after them. But lets focus on DM first.

L'ensemble Raye is an offshoot of Debile Menthol. I still haven't heard a full album, only some songs and samples, but after listening to this and reading about them in other sites mentioning them as RIO and the continuation of DM, I realised they should be brought to vote in ZART. From Gnosis2000:
"The core of L'Ensemble Rayי is Cedric Vuille (guitars, bass, clarinet, keys, ukelele, bandurria, percussion), Jean-20-Huguenin (guitars, mandolin) and Pierre Kaufmann (saxes, clarinets, piano, percussion), augmented by other musicians on guitars, drums, violin, saxes, bass and so on, with different groups of musicians featured on different tracks. Both Vuille and Huguenin were once members of the eccentric Swiss band Debile Menthol, who have several albums to their credit; Kaufmann once played with them as well. This is the second album by this group (the first was Meme en Hiver/Comme un Pinson dans L'Eau from 1990).
The sound is primarily acoustic based, tending to focus on short, quirky instrumental pieces with the guitar being by far the dominant instrument on many of the songs, with clarinet second in command. The music here is very unique - a pleasant mix of jazzy and classical styles of uncertain origin played with impeccable precision, often with idiosyncratic melodies and odd meter - thus easy comparisons are difficult, but the spirit of Albert Marcoeur, ZNR, Joel Dugrenot and others are alive and well within the writing style. The tracks are nearly split between 'solo' pieces like the positively amazing "Rag'n'rale" and "Phare EST" (both solos by Huguenin), and those involving the entire ensemble, like "Migrateurs," "Les Dons De Castor" and "Cheval Vapeur." Fourteen tracks in all.
More than anything, though, this is a guitar album, a must-have for fans of the instrument. Like Fred Frith, Larry Coryell, Chet Atkins and many others, Huguenin and Vuille take the guitar to new heights while transcending many of the convenient classifications along the way, stretching it's capabilities and illustrating it's potential. That alone makes this one of the best new albums I've heard yet this year, and will earn it a place next to other great great guitar albums in my collection.
(Originally published in Exposי #4, p.18, Edited for Gnosis 5/8/01)"
Official websites with samples:
Too bad Adam is not back yet, he can teach us all about all those.
I also am planing on ZNR.

Thanks for the head's up! Will definitely look into that! So, any opinions on Zut Un Feu Rouge? [really digging them right now ;)] [wayside]In the early to mid 1980s, Zut Un Feu Rouge were definitely one of Sweden's best avant/progressive/out rock bands, with musical ties to groups like Etron Fou and Debile Menthol; bands that took the some of the energy of rock and new-wave and tied it to 'progressive' forms. A five piece who used reeds, guitar, violin, keyboards, bass and drums, as well as vocals, the band managed to release an EP and an lp on the always interesting Bauta label, both of which are found here, along with some rarities. Pretty much essential stuff for fans of early 1980s R.I.O.-styled material. [gepr] ZUFR is perhaps one of the best hidden secrets in the Galaxy called Progressive rock and the part of cosmic supercluster named Progessive music. Some dozens thousand light years beyond the quasar Virgin V 2005, otherwise known to us as Henry Cow - Leg-end a widely stretched constellation nominated Bauta label and related musicians can be found. This constellation encompasses some barely visible stars. Then there are one or two ultraviolet giants, which again you cannot see. ZUFR’s Sweet Zutrospectacles is one of these stars and would be a fine preliminary listening (or more listenings) for those of you who’d like to check RIO genre in a smoother way (from easier to more demanding). The first passage on the voyage to Etron Fou via The Work, This Heat and Stormy Six era Al Volo or ... to Henry Cow via Hellebore. I guess this would be the easiest band to start with, esp. if you haven’t already swallowed the complete Canterbury discography and Gentle Giant opus. Their brand of music is usually defined as progressive art-punk. On initial listening it may sound quite simple, but it has its own flair, which can grip. I think they are more punky apart from other mentioned bands, but they retain the balance. And more importantly, they encompass more of that post-punk, new wave features. This early gothic rock is then mixed with Frithean sort of folky music, ethnic and world stylings and even Gentle Giant (most notably on "Von Ä Jä" and "Stomping Down Ephesus" - great medieval chorale-like singing from Lach’n’, predecessing his marvelous solo work, and piano-sax-xylophone quirks). Some opposing is here as well and some darkness escapes, but not so much as with Univers Zero and definitely less than it is usually ascribed to ZUFR. Jimbo (Toni) has drawn our attention that Volapuk are already in PA but were for some reason under fusion. He has moved them bacl to their rightful place in RIO.

What do you think of this one?
Ruinzhatova : Close to the RH
There's about a half-hour's worth of original material here, and the rest of the album is given over to three covers: Kraftwerk's "Trans Europe Express," King Crimson's "Larks' Tongues in Aspic Part II," and Yes' "Close to the Edge." And then, of course, there's the Atom Heart Mother-inspired cover.
Yamamoto Seiichi, guitar; Tsuyama Atsushi, bass; Yoshida Tatsuya, drums; Sasaki Hisashi, guitar Tracklist: Ruinzhatova is Tatsuya Yoshida and Hisashi Sasaki (Ruins) teaming up with Seiichi Yamamoto (guitarist from Bordedoms) and Atsushi Tsuyama (Acid Mother's Temple) (both of weirdo noise-pop-jazz combo Omoide Hatoba ). Yoshida and Tsuvama both also have another side-project called Akaten.

Two of my 10 favourite prog albums for thsi year 2006 are in the RIO vein, particularly on the rockier side of the genre: NeBeLNeST's "ZePTO" and OCTOBER EQUUS' "October Equus". For the former it was a splendid comeback after a slightly long hiatus, while for the latter it is a revelation of good modern RIO from outsid ethe French and Anglosaxon sections (they're from Spain).
Highly recommended for loyal RIO fans.

In South America we have a Chilean band called Yonhosago: their 2005 album "Descuento" (released by the Italian label Lizard) is a very good showcase for inventive combination of RIO, electronic minimalism, Crimsonian psychedelia circa 73-75 and musique concrete. The yshould be included in teh Archives (or are they already?...)
Highly recommended, too. |

Thank Cesar,
I have October Equus in my wish list for quite some time now, but I bought instead other albums which I really wanted for even longer... I will definitely get them soon though (probably Wayside).
As for Yonhosago; Never heard of them, but I will definitely investigate this further on.
