When I first went through my BJH mp3's, I realised the title of that song, and extremely curious about it... Not knowing what "poor man's xxx" idiom referred to; I myself thought they were indeed a kind of "poor man's moody blues"LOL. Really, I never listened much of them (you see; I prefer things more or less rtepresented in my signatureWink) but my first impression never changed: to me they are no more than a bad Moody Blues cloneCry...
I appreciate their boldness though; maybe sort of self-criticism, ehWink?
I also deeply appreciate one aspect of their viewpoint: namely, that they feature Christian themes in some of their songs... not a common characteristic of most prog bandsBig smile...

Listen to Turkish psych/prog; you won't regret:
Baris Manco,Erkin Koray,Cem Karaca,Mogollar,3 Hürel,Selda,Edip Akbayram,Fikret Kizilok,Ersen (and Dadaslar) (but stick with the '70's, and 'early 80's!)

Hope you came to listen to Cat Steven's beautiful song now... sadly there is no recording by myself yet, but I played it on the streets yesterday again to great reactions  !

Well, Andrea, this ( your ) topic may be the most important here for Fans of the "better man's moody blues" or what... look, we're addicts, incurable, BJH music INDEED sort of "owns our lives", it's for the soul and there's nothing comparable to that feel !
...I'm a musician/singer/songwriter, visit me on www.reverbnation.com/rupertlenz and there you can choose from 125 recordings you can listen to ( for free ) if you're not limited to prog-rock !

I got Octoberon and XII in the mail today.  So far, I've only listened to XII but I was very impressed.  I need a few more listens before I can judge, but I think I might even like it as much as Once Again.  The other BJH album I have is Baby James Harvest (got it with Once Again), it isn't as bad as some say, but it's a pretty big step down from Once Again.  I'd give it 3 stars and Once Again 4.  I'll post my impressions of Octoberon in a bit. Wink

Thanks Dirk and Bluesaga.Tongue

Do you have Baby James Harvest in its remastered edition? So many interesting bonus tracks as for example Child of Man and single version of Medicine Man.

Once Again, Everyone Is Everybody Else, Octoberon and XII are all classics. Probably their best from the seventies. You should add BJH Live, though. I can asure BJH did their best there.

It's the only Emi-Polydor "alliance": the album was released in 1974 after Everyone... so you can listen to Summer Soldier, Medicine Man, After the Day and also to The Great 1974 Mining Disaster, Crazy City, For No One... wonderful. Those live version are really a great improvement from the original ones.Wink

Next to be issued in October the remaster of BJH LIve Tapes (another great live double album of 1978 with bonus tracks. Not at the same level, in my humble opinion).

I agree that Live Tapes isn't quite as good. The spontaneity is lost from the previous live album and most of the songs aren't much of a departure from the studio versions.

As for Baby James Harvest, it's not their best- in fact, it's arguably their weakest of the 70s. I think the band have shunned to it to a degree, too, as little of it is of any use bar 'Summer Soldier'.

Again I can't agree... the songs have a much better flow, the singing and playing together has matured and the sound is perfect while the songs are chosen quite as good as on the old "Live" but here I am again, the man who prefers "Breakfast in America" to "Crime of the Century", the man hailing the "yellow" Genesis Album... guess I'm more a "Pop" than a "Prog"-lover but I can live with that cause it's great there are other people out there loving BJH, too... no matter for what THEY prefer !

Last week I played Live Tapes and my memories went back to the mid-Eighties when I was phoned by a former girlfriend. She asked how I was doing and it turned out that we both had just ended a relationship. Nonetheless, we made an appointment and .. this year we know each other 20 years and we are married for 16 years! What has this to do with Barclay James Harvest? Well, in a way this band has saved my marriage because our mutual musical taste was very poor because, she disliked progressive rock until ... I let her listen to a cassette with Live Tapes: the miracle happened, she started to love BJH Heart , especially the songs Child Of The Universe, Mockingbird and Taking Me Higher because these sound so warm, moving and the vocals are so beautiful, it was the first time she said " what a wonderful music" about prog Approve Later she also liked Supertramp, Pink Floyd and Camel so in my opinion most women prefer prog with emotion and a melodic structure. Anyway, thanks Barclay James Harvest and ...

Buon Compleanno + Bun Cumpleani + At faz tent avguri ad bon cumplean!

Andrea, I wish you a pleasant day Thumbs Up

I think BJH and Supertramp are good bands for girls.
They play melodic and sentimental songs... Cry
Listen: Early morning, Titles, Vanessa Simmons, Hymn for the children
Let the sunshine in
