I think it's a natural evolution for The Mars Volta, even though Jon will definitely be missed TMV will keep on proggressing.
I also thought that this would happen since Jon kept being on the verge of passing out on almost every gig, I know it's very demanding music he's making but you just can't put your health at risk this way, I knew Jon would leave eventually.

John Bonham?

I believe you meant Billy Cobham witch is REALLY his main influences in drum!

That was very unexpected news and sad too, but still good news. I love Jon's drumming, but now I'm eager to see what direction TMV will go now that he's gone. So I guess is a win win situation.Smile

wow... hadn't heard this....   that's a shame... not particularly a favorite group.. but appreciated what they were doing... more prog than 99% of what is being called prog today.

Too bad you won't be able to hear how awesome The Mars Volta will be this year. Wink

If you feel this way you are no fan of TMV. You only listen for the drummer's sake. Please move on to  better things and don't complain. Angry

I'm sorry, but it ticks me off when people idolize Jon when there some just as good and even BETTER in the band.

PS. I'm not saying Jon isnt good, i like it him a lot, but it isn't going to endanger them.

Hey, I'm a huge TMV fan. And I've practised my share of Omar licks. I do not listen for the drummer's sake, but it just happens show that he is a major factor of the TMV sound, with all the weird time signatures.

Hakke and Mike Portnoy are still on the scene though so all is not lost to be on the bright side. But seriously WHY WHY WHY WHY he is amazing he makes TMV amazing why would he leave at the release of a new album oh god I am going to listen to Meshuggah and go throw some Emo Kids around to make myself feel better.

Point taken. The new drummer definetly has some big shoes to fill. Hehe.

That is really diappointing. Does anybody know why he left? Hopefully this new guy will do just as well. The boys in the band wouldn't settle for anything less than spectacular; so I'm not worried.

Wow, this kinda reminds me when Bill Bruford announced he was leaving Yes many moons ago. I remember we all sat around bummed about it. Disapprove
