i only really know him from Vai's Sex and Religion and Ayreon's Human Equation album, and I really like what I have heard. I also like the songs featured on this site quite a bit, I just don't listen to that heavy sound anymore. I have always thought about grabbing one of his solo efforts when i order cds though. I think Ocean Machine is what I have been looking into the most. I just wonder what everyone thinks of him. There is a lot of metal related talk on this board, but i never see him get mentioned
should a kraut/psychadelic/space rock fan check the brother out

I only heard two songs by him. I´m not a prog metal fan, liking only
some of the prog metal bands. But I found their songs interesting.
Well, two songs are not considerable, but maybe he worths a try.

Devin seems to be a polarizing figure on this board - you either love him or you hate him.
Having not heard any of his other stuff, I found Synchestra quite to my liking. I'll definitely check out more. (His other band, Strapping Young Lad, just released their latest album, The New Black.)

Much like David Gilmour, I think he's a great performer (on both vocals on guitar) but I really can't say I care for his song writing / writing style.

He's the best on-stage performer I've ever seen live - great musically
and, most of all, extremely funny and entertaining. If you have a
chance to see him live, do it!
![]() His music seems to be pretty love-it-or-hate-it around here. I admit, I really didn't like it at first, but I've become a fan over time. Try the latest album by the Devin Townsend Band, "Synchestra," as it's a pretty good representation of his sound. Try the song "Triumph" - it's the one that got me into the band. |

He's not prog, in my honest opinion. This site is the only progressive
rock site that lists him, by the way, at least of the progressive rock
sites I know, and I know a few.

Devin Townsend, In my opinion, is a great musician who has established himself very well. He has alot of experience from working with some other great bands and musicians such as Steve Vai, Ayreon and Strapping Young Lad. This has helped him to acheive quite a good level of songwriting.
I own Synchestra, Terria, Infinity, and Ocean Machine and I like all those albums. Infinity and Terria are great albums, and I would recommend for anyone interested to check them out. At times the music can get a little repetetive, but nonetheless, I enjoy his 'great big wall of sound' as much as I do his great voice. |

That doesn't prove anything, because that site is not exactly picky. For example, they also list Brainstorm, a power metal band which was rejected to be included here a while ago. |

Edit: Apparently you confused two bands here: Brainstorm from the 90s (German Power Metal) and Brainstorm from the 70s (UK Prog Rock, if I'm not mistaken). BTW: Show me just *one* review that says that Townsend is not progressive ... I can't find any. Edited by MikeEnRegalia - August 01 2006 at 02:35 |

I love all of Devy's work,a couple of months ago i got a chance to see "The Devin Townsend Band"(with Opeth)and his live work hooked me even more.
Then I saw "Strapping Young" Lad a couple of days ago and it was one of the best sets I have ever seen.Devin impresses both in the studio and possibly even more on the stage.

Apparently you confuse two bands here. The Brainstorm they refer to on that site are the power metal band from Germany. The other Brainstorm were an early 70s German band that featured Roland Schaeffer, who was later to become a member of Guru Guru and Embryo. |

I really tried with Devin after reading all the glowing reviews. I like quality Prog metal and thought he'd be to my liking. After buying three of his releases I'm pretty unimpressed. As someone else said, just not my cup of tea. Devin's music tends to give me a headache.

Ok, so they list both the 70s band and the 90s metal band. I guess that my first assumption was more likely - Brainstorm were listed in the archives for quite some time until I had them removed. They were not originally listed at progressiveworld.net though ... these reviews were added to the database when they merged with ProgPower Online (and they are quite lenient when it comes to Power Metal, unfortunately). It is quite likely that other websites began to list them when they were added to the archives ...

Maybe it's not progressive in a traditional sense like Yes and Genesis but in a prog metal sense, it sounds very progressive to me.
He's listed at www.dprp.net many times, such as:

You forgot to mention the first album of the German prog band Brainstorm, "Smile a While". The cover of that one shows the four male musicians in female undies including bras, by the way. ![]() ![]() Edited by BaldFriede - August 01 2006 at 05:00 |

Men wearing female's underwear? Are you sure you didn't mix up the two Brainstorm, because that sounds like something the Power Metal band would do.
