Even when I really love all the bands named on that list, my vote goes for YES... it's the most spectacular band that I ever heard...Clap

About Rush, I would say minus 'Test for Echo', but apart from that I agree 100 % with your statement.  Overlooking Gentle Giant in a poll such as this is close to being criminal !!!  WinkLOL

Maybe because its an opinion!

You dare put Marillion on the poll and not GG?
No Dream Theater, no VDGG?

How do you live with yourself.

this poll has been fixed !!!   the separation between  high votes and low votes is just too extreme to believe ... from the moment I saw rush and Tull  only in the low hundreds and the leaders with thousands of votes I knew this poll wasn`t legit.

can fool some of the people some of the time ....

who ever ruined this pretty decent poll  is an idiot !

I do find it strange including Marillion and not Gentle Giant and Van der Graaf Generator.  You said you wished to leave out the obscure bands, but neither GG nor VdGG are obscure at this site... In fact, I believe they've always had albums ranked higher in the top 100 list than Marillion.  GG and VdGG are not that well-known outside of prog circles, but I don't know that Marillion is either (I'd never heard of Marillion before coming to this site).

Some others that I really like that I would have included are Focus, Gryphon, Premiata Forneria Marconi, and I certianly would include Frank Zappa (hardly obscure).

Actually, I would have used the top 100 list as a basis for a "favourite band" poll and would have included an "other" option, but that's just me.  Or I would have done it by subgenre or period... Neo-prog Marillion is a misfit as it now stands, and begs the inclusion of other non-70's bands of different subgenres like Dream Theater.  And I'd include Anglagard in the list as a more modern symph rock band.

Anyway, with the exception of Marillion, a good list of major names... I am surprised you omitted Zappa, Gentle Giant, VdGG, and even Focus,  as they are pretty big prog names.  Camel, though I like them, are also not one of the biggest names in prog.  Though they are popular here.

My choice as a favourite solely would be Gentle Giant if it were an option... Otherwise it's a tie between ELP, Yes, and Genesis, though I love Rush.

Hmmm... "Best prog"... Most prog ... Quintessential prog ... I have to chuck out Genesis as I don't think it as jazzy as ELP or Yes and the bands that sound the most proggy to me have strong jazz leanings (interesting rythyms and more). SO ELP vs. Yes...  Gotta have a certain bombasity, erm bombasticness  too.... So ELP?

Yep, though I don't consider ELP to be the best, ELP is the quintessential prog band... So I vote for ELP, especially due to Emerson's immense pomposity... Erm, I mean progacity.  But Yes comes close...  A major prog factor for me is the noodle quotient, and Yes were great noodlers (not a fan of noodling though).  The most prog is not the best for me then...  Still, yeah, I go for Gentle Giant and Focus.

Hamburger Concerto... best rock album... period.

Why the heck did you allow multiple votes?

It's odd that multiple votes from the same user were allowed in the first place (that's not the default option, is it?).  But as for a poll being ruined.. Whatever... I don't take these polls seriously.  Such polls are fun, but not very nutritious at the best of times.

However, I have found the top 500 albums list to be a very useful resource.... and polls can be a useful popularity guide for newbies to the music.  If it's most popular with the most prog fans here, there's a very good chance it will be most popular with the most album/ band inductees.

THE HUGELY PROPORTIONED CREATURE OF HONOURABLE AND QUIET DISPOSITION= ?
                    GENTLE GIANT!

I guess I had to state the bleeding obvious . [A feeble attempt at quirky humour for which to every other viewer of this thread I most sincerely apologise . I'll do my level best to ensure it does not happen again]!
Looking still the same after all these years...
