I totally agree. They had an influence on Fates Warning to become more prog, who, along with Queensryche (whom I don't consider nearly as progressive but still vital) founded an entire (albeit hotly debated) subgenre: prog metal

easy why they aren't as influential as other bands.... those bands created prog rock, Rush didn't, and influenced Rush in the process,  some like Yes are still influencing bands today.... simple enough even to an old fart like me...

Hmmm The old Queensryche debate again
Let´s just say 2112 was the first Prog Metal album (This will please Tony R)
Isn´t Promised Land more proggier than Vapor Trails?(This will not please Tony)

I agree with you, but the Rush topic is now turning into a Queensrÿche topic.

Hey,dont even pretend to compare Queensryche to Rush, not even just to yank my chain!

Mickey, when you talk about influence,as in the case of Yes or Genesis, are you talking about Prog as a whole genre or just Symphonic? I believe that when you talk about Prog you mean Symphonic only. The so-called Neo Prog bands, those nearest to Symphonic, are as much influenced by Rush as they are by the likes of Yes,Genesis,GG,VDGG and Jethro Tull. The fact that Rush are still releasing meaningful output suggests that they will continue to have influence whilst the Genesis/Yes influnce will naturally become more diluted.

If you look at Prog Rock in its broadest sense and consider Krautrock,Zeuhl,Jazz Rock,Psyche and Space and even Prog Metal then I believe the perceived influence of Yes and Genesis to Prog in this context is virtually non-existent.That would include Rush too, except for Prog-Metal where I think that Rush's influence is seminal.

Don't you worry, Tony, he can do much worse than that!Tongue He once dared mention Rush and Dream Theater in the same breath, which to these ears amounts to sheer blasphemy, deserving of immediate expulsion from the mighty Symphonic team...LOL

hahahha.. I noticed Ivan took your side over mine hahah... I've started sending out resumes to join the Prog Metal team if you do expell me.    I would NEVER compare Rush to Queensryche.  Remember my friends... I DO LIKE RUSH hahahha

that's pretty fair Tony and your point is taken.....   however I was speaking of the whole of prog.   If you could you you give me some examples of Rush's influence on Neo.. .I've never been a fan or that knowledgeable of neo beyond owning a few Marillioin album.. .so if so.. I will stand corrected..

However...

the fact is that Rush was in the 2nd wave was influenced by the first wave and find it hard to say that their influence was so that they rank with the groups that not only influenced them by the whole creation of the genre.. not just symphonic...  ELP was an influence on Krautrock... for example.. the 1st gen prog groups had a vast influence on prog and the major subgenres..  Let me know what you think... Neo-prog in particular.

ah contraire my dear horseman..... see my previous post... I'm about to learn just how Rush influenced a genre whose hallmark is the complete antithesis of what Rush was about.  OR.. .I'm about to learn that there are some posters you don't screw with ... and get my lunch handed to me hahahah Wink

Well, there's no such thing as a free lunch.....

As for neo-prog, I cant imagine that they could have developed their love of the emotive guitar solo from listening to either Genesis or Yes.
I cant accept that a band like IQ define a the genre as that would suggest that Neo-Prog is little more than a tribute genre...

alright, seriously, someone ban this jerk

i am not really sure what i said that was so moronic, does everything on this forum have to contribute so that we have a well developed thread where a definite conclusion is created and posters opinions are swayed by the comments made by others, oh wait, it never works out that way

therefore, my comments of no value, true, have about as much value as a thread on whether or not Rush should be more highly regarded, to what purpose baffles me, is it so that Rush fans have something to be proud of, what do you Rush dorks want out of this, more Rush threads for your silly Rush heads

Aaron

Haha, ban the moderator, riiiight....

I'm intrigued, Aaron, what makes you think you're so much better than the others on this site. And why even come here? To make yourself feel better about yourself?
