I had read some reviews by Mr. Luke earlier, and I already noticed that he didn't like Zappa and expressed this in a not very intelligent way, but this is TOO MUCH:

ZAPPA, FRANK Absolutely Free progressive rock album and reviews ZAPPA, FRANK - Absolutely Free
Review by Luke @ 12:26:46 PM EST, 7/28/2004
0 stars  —   absolutely crappy, this is rubbish and i wonder how sounds like son of suzy creamcheese had a chance to be recorded, save your ears from this lp, the only good thing about it are song titles, call any vegetable - that's nice but musically worthless. this record is for those who have too much money and want to waste some on piece of garbage.

Absolutely NO ARGUMENTS.

ZAPPA, FRANK Freak Out! progressive rock album and reviews ZAPPA, FRANK - Freak Out!
Review by Luke @ 12:33:36 PM EST, 7/28/2004
1 stars  —   give some people who never played on anything some instruments and drugs then you'll hear freak out, being completely honest i can understand if someone likes that kind of stuff but i won't understand if someone write something good about that album calling crap real music.

This is just ridiculous! The Mothers were well-trained and very skilled and educated musicians, and as we all know, Zappa was AGAINST DRUGS!

Those are unfounded arguments, that could only have come from misinformation and pretentiousness. And I second that Joren, Zappa was against drug abuse; and for those narrow-minded who didn't know like Mr. Luke here, there was a campaign led by his daughters, Moon and Diva; to fight against drugs. Zappa was only a talented musician who imposed a remarkable breakthrough, that among many others, gave birth to prog rock. Period.

Those are one person's opinions of those albums - so they are valid, if completely unfounded.

I agree Cert, but they are poor reviews. He doesn't make any attempt to explain why he doesn't like them. A well written adverse review can be just as helpful as a positive one.

I must say that the LUKE man is not easy to cope with!

I once had a lenghty mail exchange with him about my review of Tull's Under Wraps (an awful album we all agree except for him) as I was making fan of the poor artwork and music and Britney Spears! Not only did he attack me on his review but also sent me hate e-mail telling me to go review in Jazz sites (now there is an original way of say F%#* off) and leave the Tull reviewing to fans.

After a few (four or five) exchanges , I finally made him understand that his opinion while valid , was just one and certainly not better/worthy than mine (the vast majority of reviews are negative  for that album) and finally apologized , became less agressive and have not heard or read him on the site since..... until this thread.

let's just stay above the moral melee
prefer the sink to the gutter
keep our sand-castle virtues
content to be a doer
as well as a thinker,
prefer lifting our pen
rather than un-sheath our sword

Very true, Easy - but if we went through and weeded out all the poor reviews that made little or no attempt at qualification, we'd be faced with a never-ending task.

A very worthy one, I have to say...
