I bought a couple portable speakers about a year ago that are battery powered but came with a very short USB power cable (as it is usually meant for use with a laptop)
 
Since the cable is very short I cant use the speakers how I want to... so I decided to look for an adapter around the house... and we dont have one... I bought a multi voltage adapter for my CD player, but it doesnt have a 5V setting... SO I finally thought 'what about my PSP adapter?'...
 
Now, I know it was probably a dumb idea and somehow I would end up, with my bad luck and reputation of destroying electronics half-accidentally, breaking both the adapter and my speakers..
 
But I tried it and it worked, since i wasnt SO careless as to not check the voltage (I did and it was 5V and the polarity matched the speakers)...
 
Anyway it worked but then I realized that the PSP adapter was AC and the speakers were DC... I stopped using it right away... so... even though it worked... my question is to you: Should that cause any damage after prolonged use? Should it have exploded in my face when I first turned it on?
 
I want to be safe as I recently wrecked an old CD walkman by plugging it into the wrong imput on a a guitar amp... busted something and now its really quiet...
 
Plus Ive broken various other electronic items in the past because Im a damn fool and I guess when Im bored I end up taking apart electronic stuff and electrocuting myself accidentally.
 
Destroyed:
 
- Sega Genesis
- TWO Sega Dreamcasts (same night [regretted this GREATLY, those things are SO BOSS])
- Sony Playstation
- Aforementioned Walkman
- Various smaller items (Virtual pets, etc.)
 
Please, someone put an end to this maaadnesssss!

don't worry, nothing will explode. Either it would not have worked or there would have been a bypass and maybe some smoke would have come out then. Mostly there's an inner protection against something like that, but I'm not sure if you adapter would still be alright

I can identify with a lot of the breakeges . I ruined our first music center trying to wire it up to six speakers. 4 of the speakers blew too

Well anyway thanks for the replies... I still dont think I'll try it again... I dunno... it just doesn't sit well.. maybe it would take a while... and then break. Who knows... plus the mA is really high on the adapter... Im surprised it didnt die when I first tried it! LOL

In fact today I almost thought I broke another portable CD player... cause I had batteries in for taking it to walk the dog... then I plugged the adapter in so I could listen to the same song, at the part, without turning it off and fast forwarding (In the land of grey and pink, by the way, haha)... and I opened it and took the batteries out and it stopped working and... being a fool when it comes to electronics (see the previous blunders) I thought 'damn! how could I fry it? I didnt even do anything!' and I looked down and saw that the adapter light wasnt on... cause I forgot to turn on the power bar after switching it off earlier...

Maybe Ill just try to find a 5v DC adapter somewhere with lower mA... but 5vs seem to be hard to find around here...

My Dad tried to wire up a Stylophone to a old radiogramme. On xmas day at that we had to get an electrician out on xmas day (not cheap) My stylophone was OK but the radiogramme was Knackered.

Im not sure what those are... but it must have been a tragic, expensive loss... Ouch

the psp is probably dc things like that dont run from ac .
