Topic: The Flower Kings Posted: June 18 2006 at 02:12 |
I'm thinking of purchasing The Flower Kings "Back in The World Of Adventures/Retropolis", but i am not really sure if it's good.
And if i don't buy it, i might buy Uriah Heep's "Demons & Wizards" and/or "Magicians Birthday".
Help me out!

I would recommend the Flower Kings - those two albums are quite good!

just keep in mind that both of those albums are two disks long, so there is a lot to digest and sort through
so open that mind of yours and have some patience :)

I bought the Back In The World of Adventures/Retropolis boxset not too long ago. Excellent music, like a modern version of Genesis. I recommend it strongly!

Don't throw any of these heavy mellotrons at me, but I suggest you get some nice, old, fat Uriah Heep instead.

They are both good albums, though I think Retropolis is their weakest output. Make sure you check out Space Revolver and Unfold the Future, though their entire discography is solid. You'll be safe buying anything from them.

- personally speaking I'd have taken Uriah Heep over The Flower Kings anyday. Heep knew the importance of self editing which TFK often don't seem to, but then again there is much to like about TFK anyway. If you like Yes, Genesis and Gentle Giant there's a fair chance you'll like Flower Kings.
As for Heep, you can't have a better album than 'Demons and Wizards' really. Recognised as a true classic now despite critical scorn towards them at the time. If you like that, you'll like 'Magician's Birthday' too- similar album.

Erm, all I heard last weekend at Download Festival was Easy Livin' on the funfare, so I'm now fed up of that tune! Not a bad album is Demons and Wizards, because it has the very underrated bass player, Gary Thain on it, but I'd probably go for TFK. Tough choice that one!
