yeah Genesis may have 4 albums in the top 10 but that is flawed itself, and those are their only 4 albums worth listening too, while Rush has a solid discography. Rush wins in the long run but Genesis for 71-74

Why does Rush have a capital 'R' and Genesis doesn't have a capital 'G'?

I went for Genesis, i prefer there approch to structuring and texture in their music, particularly 'Foxtrot' and 'Selling...'. I love how they incorperate classical and rock ethics but remaining less pretentious than ELP, well i think so anyway.

However, I particularly love Rush for the use of conventional heavy metal styles but bringing them to an otherwise unknown (for the time period) sophistication, forefathers of all Prog Metal. Also in the thoroughly underated 80s albums, the mixing of Guitar and Synths was extremely well done, and even though they may superficially have been completely different, you could defnatly tell it was Rush.

It is a close one to call, my vote goes to Genesis, because of the similarities with Classical european music, where my primary music taste lies.

Although Rush had their moments with their late seventies/early eighties output, Genesis with Gabriel/Hackett was just out of this world.

It's Genesis, no contest. This is not just because Genesis is my top prog band. I have also been a fan of rush for a long time, but they don't compare to Genesis' compositional expertise. I don't care if they went tumbling downhill even further than Rush. Their highpoints more than make up for it. I won't even get in to the more subtle aspects. If you need a more detailed analysis, I would suggest you go to our friends Ivan, and Micky (he has been known to go to great lengths to make a point ).
I also find that I don't play Rush as much as I used to. That says something to me.

no offence but you may be wrong: http://www.progarchives.com/forum/members.asp

We may have 7,000 members, but not more than 100 are regular visitors on PA, ,ost of the mebers have few (a lot none) posts, tghe names we see each day are just a few.

yeah Genesis may have 4 albums in the top 10 but that is flawed itself,

Flawed? Why flawed? Because you don't agree? Most of the ratings are based in reviews and honest votes.

Polls like this are easier to alter than ratings, specially when we have dso many.

and those are their only 4 albums worth listening too, while Rush has a solid discography. Rush wins in the long run but Genesis for 71-74

Are you sure?:

1.- Trespass (65)
2.- Nursery Cryme (9)
3.- Foxtrot (4)
4.- Live
5.- SEBTP (3)
6.- The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway (8)
7.- A Trick of the Tail (32)
8.- W&W (70)
9.- Seconds Out (61)

I count nine and from 1970 to 1977. Some people include ATTW3 and Duke, but I don't

Rush's first album is N° 10 (After 4 Genesis albums) then 14 - 30 - 48 and 55.

At the end the level achieved by Genesis was hard to achieve by any other band.

Genesis influenced a whole sub-genre, soimething that Rush never dreamed.

I'm not trying to prove you Genesis is better but to deny that in this forum and in Prog Universe Genesis is an icon and far more accepted than Rush.

Quote oh yeah and if there is multiple votes going on I'd assume its from Genesis fans

Why would the fans of the more reviewed (along with Yes and Dream Theater) and highly rated albums would have to cheat?

this poll has been going on for a couple months, perhaps many members have been voting but not posting?

No, not because I don't agree (I do agree with the 4 in the top 10) but the system isn't perfect I do agree though this poll is easier to manipulate.

I left out a few, just my opinion.  The only Genesis albums I find worth having are #2,3,5 and 6 from your list.
Rush's first album is N° 10 (After 4 Genesis albums) then 14 - 30 - 48 and 55.
Rush has 4 in the top 100 9 in the top 500 compared to Genesis with 8 in top 100, 11 in top 500.  No argument here just adding to the stats.
At the end the level achieved by Genesis was hard to achieve by any other band.
I think a few other bands are up there. Genesis was good, but not untouchable (but that's a whole new discussion really)

Genesis influenced a whole sub-genre, soimething that Rush never dreamed.
except for prog-metal.

I'm not trying to prove you Genesis is better but to deny that in this forum and in Prog Universe Genesis is an icon and far more accepted than Rush.
Well this poll is about who's better right?  I agree Genesis edges Rush as an icon for prog (4-7 of their albums subjectively) but I believe that Rush is better because they put out mostly solid albums from fly by night-presto.  Something Genesis failed to achieve.

Quote oh yeah and if there is multiple votes going on I'd assume its from Genesis fans

Why would the fans of the more reviewed (along with Yes and Dream Theater) and highly rated albums would have to cheat?
that part was a bit subjective. I apologize, but that assumption was because of die-hard Genesis fans I've encountered on this forum, there are Rush fanatics as well though (I'm one who'd know Wink)

Genesis are one of my favorite bands but as my name may suggest Rush is my favorite band and nobody really holds up to them. While Genesis' best moments may be slightly better than Rush's, Rush has so many more great moments and are the most consistant band I've encountered.

Also Ivan I'm no so sure Genesis has Rush on influence, what prog metal band wasn't influenced by Rush?

Yes there are many bands influenced by Rush, but not exactly, Rush was influenced by Led Zeppelin and the influence that Prog Metal bands recieve comes from Led Zeppelin through Rush.

But this is an  Byzantine discussion that will take us nowhere, lets leave it in the point where both bands are influencial. LOL

We copuld talk about degrees of influence but this discussion would be perfect for math not for arts.

Same here, I never really liked Rush all that much, although their technical abilities are without question. I liked Genesis a lot more in the 70's and less and less since then. I still prefer Genesis to Rush though.
