How much knowledge do you need to become for example "Krautrock Speciallist"?
Do you only need to know when bands got together,
or something like the schools the members went to... Thanks!

Hi there, I guess it depends on what your current field of knowledge is regarding the genre. Before we even started the first specialist team, which was the prog metal one, I only created a rought outline of a possible separation of the prog metal genre (because too many bands and styles cannot be considered as one genre) and this was finetuned with others and I was asked to join the team because I simply know quite a lot about prog metal. We only require that you know what you're talking about, musically seen, I don't think you should know the birth names of the artists etc.. ![]() |

Since 1992 I write reviews for progrock magazines and progrock sites, my experience is that you have to 'know your classics' (Seventies symphonic rock dinosaurs) in order to be able to analyse symphonic rock music, most readers wants to read comparisons with Yes, Genesis, Pink Floyd, ELP and King Crimson because they are searching for matches. One of my frustrations is that most of the readers (also on Prog Archives) are not really adventurous, in fact they are very conservative and love to listen to one certain kind of symphonic rock. It's my challenge and joy to present them less known bands and perhaps that's why I am now a symphonic rock specialist because I have always (from 16 years old, around 1976) searched for more than the known symphonic rock so I started to discover Italian, Japanese, USA, Spanish and all other worldwide symphonic rock bands by reading progrock mailorder catalogi and foreign progrock magazines. You can check out my more than 700 reviews on this site, for me it's also an amazing number but it just flows out of my head because I am happy when other symphonic rock fans appreciate the less know symphonic rock |

I also like to listen to a variety of music, not only different types of prog but also various electronica things, it's not all metal for me, although that's my specialist position around here. I can easily enjoy a good piece of symphonic prog or space rock or post rock

I dislike most of the so-called Classic-era Prog Dinosaurs, but am very familiar with their work.
I never class myself as an expert on any genre (because I am not-simple as that) but I know what I like.... ![]() |

I like to read about bands and artists and gather info that way, plus my way of knowing bands is by discovering them, this site and other sources have influenced me to know more about bands I know and don't know.
