Not a connoiseur. I think that prog metal is excellent music....but i don't like it. And I don't distinguish between Heavy Metal and Prog Metal. Queensreich  "Empire" I've heard many times, I love it, but it's heavy metal, I don't find prog in there, excepting it tells a story... Dream Theatre is very progressive but too noisy and frantic. Heavier than I can stand. In heavy Metal, the heaviest I can enjoy is Metallica. Heavier than that I pass....
I like Tormato, so shoot me! Every person in the world can't think the same.

I'm voting prog metal on this one. No matter how much I try, I just can't get into it, including Dream Theater.

Even in English cuisine you can find great dishes, so how can one say "I do not like the whole subgenre"; but less prefered for me are Metal and Neo. And from Indo/Raga I've only heard Third Ear Band, and still do not know if I like it or not - partially....

I don't have much experience, but from what I've heard I'll go with proto-prog (because I don't like The Moody Blues at all) and prog metal (because I don't like LTE and Porcupine Tree is under Space Rock, although there are some metal elements in them. Rush isn't bad, but the vocals...)

Definitely prog metal. A friend of mine gave me copies of most of Dream Theater's CDs which I managed to listen to carefully. (I mean in a quiet room with good quality HIFI headphones). I could not stand listening to the end of any of the CDs I had.

My conclusion is definitive, whatever this site's masters may claim in return: there is no prog in this. I heard noisy, repetitive, inspirationless, and not even technically great metal with some (tenous) Black Sabbath and Deep Purple reminiscences.

I gave them a second chance listening to them via loudspeakers (also goo quality). My wife, who enjoys a lot of prog bands, and children, who are playing in rock bands demanded that I lower the volume, being tired of the noise.

Galaxies away from what you can hear from bands classified in the other subgenres.

I fact, in prog metal, there is one word in excess. Like saying "Cold Heat" or "Dark light" or "Intelligent Politician"Big smile

I dont know what you were listening to but that doesnt sound like DT to me.

As far as  the genre's go,  I havnt found one yet that I dont like, but then I havnt heard all genres and to be honest Electronic is probably going to be the last port of call for me.
In this respective order, I listened to:

When Dream and Day Unite
Awake
Once in a Livetime
6 Degrees of Inner Turbulence
Train of Thought
Octavarium

And still you never found prog in those albums eh???
Oh well...

I'm shocked but not surprised Smile.I love the more accessible canterbury efforts like Caravan and Steve Hillage, have to check out the others. I think i'll abstain from voting here, don't know enough about all the genres. Generally i'm not that fond of metal  but there are some great bands in the prog metal section here on PA. The bands that i dislike most are also in the prog metal genre.

I have a feeling that experimental postrock is not my cup of tea but here my experience is limited to Godspeed. Shouldn't Kayo dot be in this genre rather than the progressive metal genre? I found them somewhat similar to Godspeed but louder (after listening 2 times to the sample here on PA so i might be talking total nonsense here)

In matters of love and hate I do not generalize and therefore can't vote a whole subgenre as being my least favourite or hated.

In each subgenre there are many bands I love and some I don't like or simply don't get into.

voted for Avant-prog. just to be in a small company, not alone, not in a middle of a crowd that can't hear any prog in 6 Degrees...

but then again... avestin & eugene are probably right.

Symphonic prog - I love Yes and hate Genesis
Art prog - don't sure what it is... let's look in list... must be Supertramp (love) and Rush (hate)
Proto prog - I love Deep Purple and hate Procol Harum
Prog Related - I love Parsons. why he isn't prog? are you joking? forget of Parsons, it's prog until '83. love Jon & Vangelis, hate Peter Gabriel
Prog Metal - love Dream theater, love Pain of Salvation (I want to thank to Acade... I mean, Prog Archives), hate Queensryche
Kraut prog - love Grobschnitt, hate Can
Italian Symph prog - I simply don't understand it. I'm working on it.
Zeuhl - love MDK, working on others
RIO/Avant prog - love Samla Mammas Manna, hate Birds of Mesozoic
Jazz rock/Fusion - love DiMeola, hate Colosseum
Cantebury - is Moerlen's Gong Canterbury? hate early Gong. also love Camel hate Hatfield and the North.
Experimental /Post Rock - no comments, I'm working
Neo Prog - love Marillion, hate IQ
New Symphonic - what's that? don't know such animal.
Prog Folk - love Jethro Tull, hate Jethro Tull. like a common marriage.
Electronic Prog - love Vangelis, hate Tangerine Dream
Psychodelic/Space Rock - love Pink Floyd, love Nektar (even if it's sympho, as for me it's obviously a clone of Yes), love Porcupine Tree, hate Eloy
Indo Prog/ Raga Rock - never heard. maybe hate, not sure
you know, I'm a very very complicated man...
