I agree with this suggestion.

Deadwing, no doubt... but there is a lot of great heavy songs at "Lightbulb Sun", "Stupid Dream" and even "Sky moves Sideways" (very pinkfloydian but there's some great stuff on "Dislocated Day" and "Sky Moves...")...

But if you are looking something heavy with raw guitars and that stuff, PT maybe isn't the right choice... But WHAT A BAND!!

My own personal favourites are In Absentia (IMO their most complete album), Deadwing, Lightbulb Sun and The Sky Moves Sideways. I find Stupid Dream has a few gems but seems transitional and lacks focus and confidence. Signify too is patchy, it has the wonderful Dark Matter (one of their finest) and the excellent Every Home is Wired but there's a lot of aimless filler, again it feels directionless. Sky Moves Sideways is a surprisingly good album, the fullest realisation of the band's spaciness. There are sundry other excellent tracks scattered across a variety of releases and perhaps the best way to go is to get Deadwing and In Absentia and then perhaps the Stars Die: The Delirium Years compilation. There's great stuff on there from the first period of PT. Recordings has some cool stuff too like Buying New Soul. Funny but even the b-sides are often great, the two tracks on the Lazarus single from Deadwing, So Called Friend and the gorgeously mellow Half Light are well worth seeking out. It's also worth giving a listen to the Blackfield album, which is a real grower.

Deadwing, they still manage to impress me with their music.

 

I find it funny. I am a fairly new fan of the band, but I discovered them backwards from the way people are discovering them these days(In Absentia or Deadwing). 

I downloaded 'The Sky Moves Sideways' and 'Coma Divine' one day, and found it to be pretty interesting. The next day I found a copy of 'Up The Downstair', and that album hooked me for some reason. Funny it's not been mentioned yet, as it is a great album. One of my favorites, and a wonderfull addition to my CD collection.

After spending the last six to seven months diving into the world of Porcupine Tree, I find my favorites are Stupid Dream, Lightbulb Sun, Up the Downstair, and Deadwing. Really though, you can't go wrong with any of Porcupine Tree's albums.

I also recomend Steve Wilson's side project Blackfield. The self titled album is dark, mellow, and gloomy, but really well done in my opinion. It's not a heavy riff fest or anything of that sort though, but it makes for a great rainy day album. A new album is expected sometime this year I believe.

yes if you like kind of experimental trance spacey stuff you'll love it. i personally think there is no such thing as a PT album thats not worth it. I own every one except for the singles.

as what I heard (not all albums), I'd said that there's at least two incarnations oif Procupine Tree.

first, Floyd-like. then it's Staircase Infinities, The Sky Moves Sideways (huh, I thought of Wish You were Here too), Metanoia and so on.

second is more MTV-like song-oriented rock/grunge, but newerthless pretty good. these are In Absentia, Deadwing, Lightbulb Sun and Recordings (not sure, is it a collection or album).

The Sky moves sideways still remains my favourite... actually I am more of a fan of their 'old' era than the newer stuff... but I don't think they have a single album that I dislike!

The Sky Moves Sideways for sure. Voayge 34 isn't too shabby either. But The Sky is in my Top 5 Space-Rock albums. Simply amazing.
