Topic: Primal progressive screams Posted: April 19 2006 at 15:25 |
Most of the times I like to think of myself as a fairly civilised person with a delicate, subtle taste , but I have to admit that sometimes I like my prog heroes to scream a bit, lose their temper.
Examples: Peter Gabriel in The Musical Box ("now, now, now, now, now") and Stagnation ("I wanna sit do-hown!") and the strange sounds he does on Aisle Of Plenty, the "Piltdown Man" on Mike Oldfield's Tubular Bells, Peter Hammill in general, Alquin when Michel van Dijk was their lead singer, Roger Waters in Careful With That Axe, Terra In Bocca by I Giganti, ...
So I'm not talking about metal music but more "common" prog. I like my favourite prog singers to act a bit uninhibited every now and then.
How about you?

That part of TB always reminded me about The Swamp Thing comics when I read them being a teenager. I'm sure that The Swamp Thing would have sung like that.

Hello Moogtron III, nice topic!
You should listen to Italian band Jacula, their singer is a 'progwitch', straight from Hell!

Well, the first singers who came to my mind have already been mentioned:

I absolutely love Gildenlöw's voice in general. The way he sounds on 12:5.... The second one who comes to mind is ofcourse Mikael Akerfeldt, but I'm not allowed to mention him .

I think the only time I heard Derek Shulman (Gentle Giant) really
scream was in the song 'Number One' off their Civilian album. It's only
short but seemed like he was releasing pent-up frustrations about the
end of an illustrious but non-commercial career for Gentle Giant. I
love it!!!!!!!

Yeah, Peter Hammill! I' think the screaming in "Man-Erg" is particularly effective.

My favorites are Gabriels scream of "Jerusaleeeeemm!!!!!!" at the end of Supper's Ready,
and Roger Daltry's "YEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAHHHHHH!!!!!!!!" at the end of Won't get Fooled Again.

How about Yes performing The Beatles' "I'm Down" live in 1976, at the end of disc #3 of the Yesyears box set. I've never heard Jon Anderson scream like it before or since! "Down down down down ... WOW!! Don't cha know I'm down!"

Arguing with anonymous strangers on the internet is a sucker's game because they almost always turn out to be or seem to be self-righteous sixteen-year-olds possessing infinite amounts of free
time.
