Okay, so I need some help. I have been looking for some new stuff, and the archives helpred, but I still have trouble narrowing it down, so I thought maybe some of you guys and gals could help me out. My favorite band of all time is Tool. I like a lot of metal like Medvayne, Machine Head and the like, and older stuff like Yes, Genesis, Pink Floyd, King Crimson (earlier stuff) etc. What I am looking for is some newer prog rcok/metal. I really have gotten into Coheed and Cambria and Mars Volta, although I can't really get into Frances the Mute. I have looked into a lot of the prog metal on here, but it is usually too dramatic for my tastes. I am not a big fan of Dream Theater. I might get into them at some point in the future, but right now that isn't what I am looking for. Another band that seems to be cool from the few songs I have heard is Dredg. I guess I am looking for something new wthout being overly dramatic, and I don't like vocalist who do that high pitch squeelt that became popular with 80's hair metal. I also am looking for newer stuff, because I always have the classic band like Yes and Crimson to fall back on. Okay, soooo, do you have anything in particualr I should check out? It can't be too obscure, cause I like to download some songs before I buy a CD. Any help would be appreciated. |

Rael, maybe you should look into contemporary prog metal. There are many stuff in www.insideoutmusic.com there you can download prog metal from bands like "Enchant", "Vanden Plas", "Symphony X" and other stuff that may be of your interest. As a suggestion, don't get into despearation, listen to every style and every band, there are bands that maybe are not perfectly good but there are some other things that may sound good. Have a good listen!!!! |

I'd recommend Khoma - The second wave, hopefully you'll like it! It's hard to describe their music, not progressive, not metal but very dark and beautiful at the same time with some great riffs and wonderful melodies! Some say they sound like a mix between Tool and Radiohead. visit their homepage, www.khoma.net, where you can watch their new video "Medea", an outstanding song!! |

I was introduced to Riverside yesterday and have already ordered a disc.
Sounds like they'd be up your alley. E |

MESHUGGAH!!! i dont know man i was born a metalhead and if you're into metal with some prog flavor i'd go with Meshuggah (as long as you can stand innumerous time shifts) and definitely one of my favorite bands of all time Opeth (start with Ghost Reveries or Blackwater Park). If none of those satisfy you then go out and grab a Devin Townsend album (I recommend Terria or Synchestra). and there you go. Oops and almost forgot Sepultura. Theyre not prog but god are they heavy! Get Roots and you'll know what I'm talking about. |

If you want to try some non-metal stuff that's "off the beaten track",
so to speak, you might want to consider the likes of Magma, Van Der
Graaf Generator, Ruins, Guapo etc. They may appeal to you as they
create very dark sounds, and they all epitomise the word "progressive".
Be prepared for new sounds.

Another suggestion for Tool fans: The new Katatonia album! It's even available on www.emusic.com ... it's really nice, their most progressive IMO.
