I want to know if it worth the developpement efforts

What is RSS @ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RSS_%28file_format%29


Or if a newsletter is still the way to go to syndicate our new reviews.

I started a poll about RSS half a year ago ... still waiting for any meaningful responses. So good luck with this poll!

BTW: I think that RSS is vastly superior to any E-Mail newsletter. You just need to promote it better. But I don't think that it would make sense on an artist/album level. I think it would be best if we could simply select genres (checkboxes).

Here's how you could implement it:

/rss.asp?genres=10,23,44

Simply parse the genres parameter and use the genre IDs in an SQL query. Then all we need is a form where you can select genres and as a result the system builds the url, which you can then bookmark.

Here's a quick RSS tutorial:

  1. Download Mozilla Thunderbird: http://www.mozilla.com/thunderbird/
  2. In Thunderbird, create a new account, select "RSS" as account type and enter this url: http://www.progarchives.com/RSS/progarchives.xml
  3. Voila!

Of course you can use RSS in numerous ways, this is only a suggestion to get you started! Of course it's especially useful if you can use Thunderbird for E-Mail too ... so you get it all in one application.

I think Mike's idea of a genre-level is a good one.

Thunderbird looks decent at handling RSS, as well (certainly a lot better than Firefox ). Opera's also worth a try since it's intergrated into the browser itself (and email, and soon Bittorrent. Lovely )

  • You'd like to conveniently monitor many websites using RSS
  • You also have some email accounts that you'd like to use via POP3 or IMAP

then IMO Thunderbird is THE application for you.

Certainly; I have no problems with Thunderbird - I used it occasionally to test encryption in emails - I was just pointing out how great Opera is . I might have a look at Thunderbird for RSS now since I'm not so happy with Liferea which is what I was running on Linux.

edit: whoops, seems I actually have Evolution installed, not Thunderbird...
