Why do I say this? Because much of it was actually built in the studio. Gabriel added vocals and Steve, guitar, before releasing the material. No telling who added what else. I like to hear the real thing.

Genesis were a fantastic band on stage, so therefore I collect and enjoy the real  live recordings. There are some excellent (and genuine) examples of what they actually sounded like live. Its a heck of a hobby trying to find them --- but well worth it once they are found.

hmm..  good post.  I got ahold of an Italian show from '72 or '73 and it was FANTASTIC!!!

Dream Theater
It is emotionless and unmoving and I find it lame, and a complete bore
Iron throated monsters are forcing the screams;
Mind and machinery box-press our dreams

Fantomas.  It's not that I don't like "weird" stuff (I like Taal and Alamaailman Vasarat), but I just can't get into them at all.  Really, the only prog band I consider to be BAD.

Yessongs was a bit of a dissapointment for me. But then again I've never seen the movie, it could be better???? Its all the pissing around each member does instead of reproducing studio sounds.

...and speaking of Yes,I would NEVER call them BAD, but I cannot, no matter how many times and albums I've tried, get into YES. (here come the insults...) It's Anderson's vocals I can't get into, way to "twee". Musically they are beyond good, but it's just those damn vocals...not for me (that's why I dislike Starcastle too...) (Yes, I already tried 'Drama', recommended by a friend who knows I don't like Jon Anderson...and the guy sounds just like Jon Anderson!)

Finally.... someone who agrees with me... Having my eardrums perforated with a jackhammer is far more enjoyable than listening to Jon Andersons....... well..... what can u call it.  Which is a shame.  The other musicians of Yes are very talented, and Yessongs sits in my 'vinyl' collection, unjustifyingly unused. I dont want to get rid of it, the album is great, but I cant play it 'cause of Jon....... Unfortunately, I do tend to say the same about Cedric (from the Mars Volta)... a talented band with a...... oh well.

I really like this jacket, but the sleeves are much too long.

What I could never get into:

- Bands that over-expose their technical abilities on the cost of emotion and passion; I'm not going to mention names here, but I guess you'll understand what I'm hinting at...

- Canterbury hippiesh*te. 'Jazzy' interludes, going on forever! Brrr....

Jesus never managed to figure out the theremin either

From the very well known albums i find In the court of the Crimson King somewhat dissapointing.
I like Red much better.

I couldnīt tolerate Yes (the vocals mainly), but they are growing on me lately and I actually am getting into them more.

For those who canīt get into Dream Theater, a good idea is to start with Falling into Infinity. That is probably theior most proggish release.(And the least liked by fans of Dream Theater)LOL

For those who have problems with Spockīs Beard, I suggest Octane.

As for me I just canīt get into ELP. Hoedown sounds like a bloody electric barn-dance.

It's stranege how I like everything that people mentioned here that's prog.

My list

  • ALL PUNK
  • All rap/hip hop
  • All nu metal
  • All teen pop
  • Kiss
  • Spastic Ink
  • Accept
  • Cannibal Corpse
  • ELO (Electric Light Orchestra)
  • PF's The Wall (LOVE the rest)
  • Eagles
  • Abba
  • Elvis
There's more of course, I'm generally skeptic towards non-prog stuff.

Ah, prog bands I DON'T like?

Well, let's see...

1. Post-Gabriel Genesis(everything was great, but after "The Lamb",
things
went downhill)
2. ELP after Brain Salad Surgery-Just one song on Love Beach almost
made me lose my cookies, and I had to listen to Close To The Edge in
order to get my bearings back.
3. Most raga-rock I have a hard time listening to, some Krautrock really
drives me nuts(although I like Faust and Kraftwerk), and most jazz fusion
puts me to sleep.
4. Apologies to those who like it, but I really don't like neo-progressive
rock. It's just whiny and dull, in my opinion.
5. Don't like Gentle Giant too much either. I feel like I'm not getting the
experience I usually get out of symphonic prog.
6. post-Waters, pre-Division Bell Pink Floyd. In other words: A Momentary
Lapse of Reason. Dull and boring.
7. Prog metal is a mixed bag for me. I kinda like Tool.

Ain Soph

These Japanese jazz-fusionists are the undisputed kings of boredom. 95% of their discography is a total yawn-inducing mess (particularly the later albums). But a lot of jazz fusion is really dull anyway.

Dark Side of the Moon never did anything for me either - I disliked it even when I was an unassuming classic rock fan .

Oh, and Power Metal

These aren't least favorites, but here are some major, major, major disappointments:  Rush's Counterparts, Yes's Big Generator, Kansas's Power.

Least favorite bands?  James LaBrie solo is definitely up there.

I LOVE Counterparts

even though it wasnt their most prog album

Nobodys Hero is a fantastic lyric
