What is your favourite xylophone solo? I like the one in "Knots" by Gentle Giant.

No-one beats Gong when it comes down to that. Too many to name though. But the late Pierre Moerlen, his brother Benoit and Mireille Bauer all were masters of tuned percussion instruments like xylophone, vibraphone and marimbaphone.

I know it's not technically the xylophone, but Ruth Underwood is just
about the most talented marimba player I've ever heard.

Fred Frith played some tasty xylophone with Henry Cow - he adds a few discreet embellishments to Ruins, and plays a rather manic solo on the epic improv Oslo off Concerts. Hans Bruniusson plays some pretty good xylophone with Samla/Zamla Mammas Manna as well.
All the other suggestions so far are good, and it's especially pleasing to see Ed Mann get some recognition.

I had no idea Frith was in Henry Cow! I always wondered where he came from (I've only heard solo works of his).

He was in Henry Cow and the Art Bears. And since Henry Cow collaborated with Slap Happy, he played with them too.

I saw the girl members of Sigúr Rós on Jools Holland playing some xylophone, erm, apart from them, the only other xylophone I can think of is, I think in King Crimson.
It's an instrument I've always thought I'd be good at!
Ah, maybe Tubular Bells? That album has a Glockenspiel, does it have a xylophone too?

As fair as I remember a xylophone has wooden keys, a glockenspiel metal keys - as does a vibaphone which has a vibration as well (although Bill Bruford used the vibes with the vibe unit turned off on Feels Good To Me).
Check out Olly Hassell, guitarist supreme, with Timebox and Patto for some great vibes too.

My favorite is the jazzy nurseryrhyme like solo in Gentle Giant's
'Schooldays'. Great flow, warm, touching yet complex. Just like the
whole song. Perfect.
What is the instrument used in the middle of Can's 'Vernal Exuinox'
from album 'Landed'? Is it some kind of drums? Its soo good. Just
asking because i was remembering it as a xylophone solo. Its clearly
not.

There are 2 separate versions of 'FUNNY WAYS' on the DVD 'GIANT ON THE BOX' each of which features a stunning solo from Mr.Minnear,although I think he's on vibes. Absolutely stunnig stuff if you haven't seen it,made all the more remarkable by his running back to pick up that white cello to continue his string duet with Mr.R.Shulman and his vocal duet Mr.D.Shulman.Essential for any GG fans in particular.Hard to find better!

was the begining of Larks tongues in aspic pt. 1 done on a xylophone?
im not saying its the best, I'm just curious to find out.
I just realized I know absolutely nothing about tuned percusion instuments.
